Does anyone out there know how to repair trip speedos? While on my roadtrip, the odometer and trip counter have stopped working. The funny thing is that it will start to work randomly for about 5 miles then quit again. I have tried to repair them in the past and never quite figure out the problem.... Who does or knows who does repairs?

I know someone that fixed one once, :-S

How did this 'someone' do it? I have tried a couple different speedos and haven't been able to figure out what was wrong in the first place.

Pop your drivers side hub cab off and see if the end of the speedo is still held in place with a very small C clip. my clip was missing way back in the day and sometimes the speedo would work and other times not. I replaced that little c clip and it has worked ever since
Cheers

The speedo works fine... the odometer and trip meter don't.

Send it to Jim Adney, he fixed mine. Mine was doing the same thing yours is doing. I don't know what he did, but it works.

I fixed mine a while back (should have taken pics). Same problem-- speedo worked but trip odometer did not, and hence the regular odometer did not either. The trip odometer turns the main odometer, so if that does not work, neither does the other.

There is a metal pin/shaft with a gear on one end that goes through the trip odometer (the numbers revolve on it). The gear turns from the speedo cable. The other end of the pin is pressed into a thin gear that connects to the main shaft of the odometer.

The trip shaft on the main drive pin from the speedo is slotted so it does not go anywhere. On the thin gear to the main odometer, it is just pressed into place. What happened on mine was the shaft was spinning, but not spinning the thin gear.

I took it apart and beat up the end that goes to the thin gear. Had to hammer it back in (be careful!) to seat it. No problems in 3 years.

It is tricky going in there and again, I should have taken some pics as this is hard to explain, so sorry for the length of the post!

I will try that procedure and report back... Thanks Philman!

You most likely are young and not a "greaser" or you might possibly have known where the quote came from. Sorry it shocked you.

Okay, anyone have an idea what an NOS or even a nice condition T3 trip speedo is worth nowadays? Thanks...

My gear that connects the cable drive gear system to the gear that turns the odometer was not engaging properly it would slip out. I made it stay by crimping a cable crimp on the opposite side and I flipped the gear around that connects to the odometer numbers. If I remember correct, the odometer gearing drives the trip meter gearing. (I wish I took pictures). It has worked ever since, took some modification but I would not have done it if I could afford to send it out. Its been fine for about 8 months and no change in turn rate i.e. 1 mile equals 1 mile on my gauge. . . . Or just send it out. Not sure what a new one would cost if you can find one that matches but you see used ones on here all the time.
