Wife and I are planning to take a two week drive down highway 1 this spring - what are the "must see/do" things - our interests are mainly art, history, nature and old pop culture - we could use some B&B and seafood restaraunt recomendations, too

Gracias, Mark

You're welcome to stop in and see my submarine.

 So would that stop be "art, history, nature and old pop culture"?

Yes.

The Henry Miller Library in Big Sur is a nice stop.
And if you have any interest in large Sea Mammals there's a large crew of them out on the beach across from the Hearst Ranch.

That was the highlight of the trip that we made in late December. Awesome.

South of Big Sur is an artist community called Cambria that you might enjoy. There you can take Hwy 46 over to Paso Robles for some outstanding wine tasting if you like Zins and Cabs. A little south In Pismo Beach there is a pretty good hotel for not too much called the Kon Tiki Inn that is right on the shore. Hope it helps.

South of Cambria is the small town of Harmony, population 17 I think. You can watch the glass blower there... very cool stop!

Can't believe that no one has said Hearst Castle in San Simeon yet. I've been all over California, but that is the most amazing place I've ever seen in the state.

These articles offer some good suggestions too. Hope this helps.

Old Cayucos Tavern & Card Room
Liquor in the front . . . Poker in the rear.
Since 1906

There's some History in that bar... a must see.

On a 3 day trip from San Francisco to L.A. we found the best
moderate priced lodging at Casa Munras in Monterey.
Best sea food: The Inn at Morro Bay closely followed by Lucia Lodge(south of
Monterey).

The Sardine Factory in Monterey on Cannery Row is awesome. I had my reception there.

Fort Bragg is worth a look.

Hearst Castle is very cool but "the coolest place in Cali"? There's a little park called Yosemite that might be states best spot...

There is an awesome B&B in Cambria called the J. Patrick House

Visit Mission Santa Ines

and most importantly don't forget to tour the Gainey Winery...

Gowesty.

marklaken Mon Feb 11, 2008 1:39 pm

The westy will not be ready :( (hence the B&Bs)

lorse Mon Feb 11, 2008 1:49 pm

Well, you could camp out in My Westy right next to the submarine...
If my cocks crowing doesn't bother you.

KTPhil Mon Feb 11, 2008 2:02 pm

Are you planning to take in the whole length of Highway 1?

Also, if it has rained, call Caltrans or check the web before taking the Monterey to Cambria section; it can be closed to slides after a heavy downpour.

As long as a couple of days doesn't turn into a few months.
I still have that OG Hobo Williams poop bucket somewhere.
