View original topic: MK2 Transmission Mount Question

I Have a 1985 Golf that has a swapped 16V engine in it. This is my first one so I have no knowledge of everything that goes onto the car. The Bentley only shows so much.

My question is there a transmission mount under the shifter area? The reason I ask is there is two bolts coming out from the trans case and it looks like there should be a mount atttached.

It is too bad I did not notice this earlier. There was a 16v in the junk yard I could have looked at but it is gone now. :)

Thanks for any input.

There is a mount behind the trans; the bolts you saw are most likely the ones that hold the bracket to the transmission case. The mount itself is a 'cup' style, and it sits down in a pocket in the suspension crossmember - when it's in place, you really only see the top 1/3 of it. The bracket attaches to the top of the mount with one big bolt, and the mount has a 2-bolt outer flange that holds it in the crossmember.

If you're planning to replace any of the three mounts, I'd say replace all three at the same time; if one is bad, it more than likely has allowed the extra movement to damage the others. Replacing just one is like my grandfather called 'putting a Band-Aid on a bullet hole.'

Thanks,

I will have to see if I can find a bracket somewhere. I hope I can find another 16V soon because I don't know what to ask for. I guess I could go to VW and see what their parts diagrams show. :)
