Don't do it! Reeks of cheese! Would be akin to:
Cut wheel wells for big tires
Shag carpet everywhere inside
Wooden rear bumper
Camaro seats
Corvair engine
Wood stove inside with chimney sticking out roof
Hippy paintings on the outside
truck mirrors on the doors
Propane tank hanging off the back hatch
Did I miss anything? Just don't do it! Find a deluxe sunroof instead. |

| I have a sunroof that came with the car as an option? It leaks like a motherf&*ker. Don't recommend it. Its like a giant wind tunnel if you drive down the freeway with it open. I have lost shirts and other crap this way. |

| I have a 69 sunroof bus and wouldnt wish the perils of that on anyone but the 68.00 piece of crap is going to leak like crazy and will look like shit as well my opinion of course as it is your car do what you want they can be cut out with a saber saw or sawzall or if your super lucky a plasma cutter which will burn your headliner there was one for sale a few months back in texas somewhere but it was a total piece of shit it had at least three of the features mentioned above shag carpet and camaro seats no bumpers or interior though they failed to mention the sunroof though when I was like 16 I put one of those shitbox ones in a bug it leaked like crazy please benefit from my experience bad as it was. |

| i dont get all this negative feed back on the moon roof. that first guy said to put in a sunroof at least but i didnt know there was a difference. if we are talking about a window about 15" by 24" that is hinged along the front and pops up about 3' along the back when opened then we are all thinking the same. i have one in my 71' and i love it. it does NOT leak a drop, it add great venalation, it does NOT create a wind tunnel, if done proffessionally it doesnt affect your headliner, if you smoke cigarettes(or anything else) it sucks it straight out, the curve of the roof doesnt matter and it looks very slick. i dont think they are cheesy at all, besides its your bus and if you want to paint hippy stuff on it or camero seats in it then go right ahead. and that thing about shag carpeting, when our buses were made that stuff was in so if you want to get original to the theme that doesnt even seem so bad. |

Don't you think a curved one for a bug would work. They have the conture of the roof. I have one and was thinking of putting it in my bus. |

| my moon roof is flat, but it seems to me that the front roof section above the front seats is not as curved as the rest. it kind of tapers off. i guess its just the way they cut it. if you look at all these new cars driving around like the nissans or mustangs or what ever, a lot of them have moon roofs even though the tops of them are rounded so i dont think it matters too much. trust me its easy and auto glass places wont freak out when you bring it in(unless they arent very good and in that case you shouldnt let them do it any way).if you have one for a bug that might work great, but it might be too curved ya know. just take it some where and ask. it doesnt hurt to ask and its free.good luck |

| Couple things...first the differences between a sunroof and a moonroof. Both can be either glass or metal, though I have never seen a metal sunroof. The difference is, a sunroof glass pops up and usually removeable, and a moonroff glass (or metal roof) slides back and is usually powered by an electric motor. The stock Bus MOONroof obviously wasn't powered by a motor, but most modern day cars have moonroofs factory as an option and are all power. I put a power moonroof in my '86 Cougar myself with a jigsaw and some DeWalt bimetal blades. Lots of measuring and double checking first, cut the hole, trimmed to fit the roof in, and sealed it in with automotive grade black urethane. Looked great, never leaked a drop. As far as losing things out of a sun/moonroof, its a giant hole in a vehicle traveling at highway sppeds, things can get sucked out of an open car window just as easily. All it takes is a little common sense. I would love to be able to put my power moonroof into my West, but the fiberglass top is kind of a hindrance to doing it. Everyone has their own opinion, its your Bus, do what you want with it. I tried to get a place that does sunroof installs just to cut the hole for me in my Cougar and I couldn't find anyone to do it, and they wouldn't install the used moonroof either. They said they could not warranty a hole in the roof. I explained to them my situation ($200 car, what did I care>) and they refused to even lay it out for me. So Iwent at it on my own and it worked out great! |

| thank you vwlover for clearifying the differences between the two. i guess i have a sun roof then, becuase mine just pops up a few inches along the rear edge and its tinted. getting some one to do it for me wasnt hard at all. when i bought the bus it already had it in there, but thruogh stupidity on my part i somehow managed to pull it into a garage with the sunroof open, then when i left the next day i pulled out forgeting it was open and it cuaght on the garage door and shattered. all i had to do was take it to ziebart auto glass( which is in illinois, but i think they are nation wide) and they replaced the seal, the glass and everything else for like 190 or so. that price would have included them cutting the hole had there not already been one. i was pleased. some times companies are wierd though with warrenties on partial jobs or materials that arent theirs. one other thing, i suppose if you drove on the highway with the whole thing out i guess that would be pretty windy and you might lose a hat or something, but with a little commonsense and the thing opened only a few inches you will be just fine. either way though i am totally happy with mine and i think they are a great idea. |

| I agree, they are a great idea. I'm thinking about putting one in my 72 because I use to have one im my car and loved it. As to anyone that doesnt like it, dont do it, it's as simple as that. |
