I just bought a 1998 Passat. The owner only had 1 key which I found out is the Valet key. I was wondering how I go about getting a new key that will lock the glovebox and unlock the rear hatch. I have read that the cut is the same, but there must be some difference.

Also I don't have a remote for this. The original was what they called the Banjo style. Can I buy a flip remote and program it to work?

Thanks
:)

The valet key should only work in the ignition and doors. The dealer can cut new keys using your VIN number. You'll probably need to bring proof of ownership like your registration card and driver's license.
I'm not sure if the flip style remote would work or not.

The key itself is a bit different as far the profile (the bumps in the key itself). The cuts are the same.

Yes you can switch the key blades from a banjo style key to the flip keys. There was a sticky on this in the tech articles on clubB5 a few years back. Try searching the archives on the Passatworld forums.

Basically all you need to do is press a roll pin out of a flip blade key and remove the blade from a banjo key. There were some issues getting the remotes to work properly but I believe there was a work around using a vag com. Not sure if a dealer will do that for you or not. Passatworld.com is a better forum for the B5 cars than here, just get out your kiddie goggles.

no a flip key will not work in a 98. vw changed the comfort module programming and you have to use the 5051 scan tool to program it. you can program the banjo remote if you have 2 keys or if you remove the key cylinder and use a screw driver in the door and the key in the ignition. i work for a vw dealer and thats how we do it.

Hate to disagree with you, but I've seen it done and work perfectly more than a few times right after the flip keys came out. It does involve the VW scan tool or a licenced version of a VAGCOM. I've seen one and used one personally on a 98.
