Well, I decided to start another build thread for my baja Im building now. I picked the car up pretty cheap in December. It came with a parts car that was in horrible condition, but I salvaged rear trailing arms, complete front beam, and a type 1 tranny. The previous owner says its a '72, but I think it might be earlier. Any hints, let me know. It came with a bolt in cage that was welded in, but I plan on doing full cage when time and money allow. As for the motor, Im rockin' a sp 1600 with a crazy knock. Hopefully an 1835 is in the near future!! Gimme your thoughts and dont be gentle!
This is day one.
Cut the hood off and showin' off my great wiring skills!
This is my freeby hood thats just set on. Im planning on doing all the fiberglass repair to fix the hood. Still would be cheaper than brand new. And please excuse the pack rat garage, were moving this week to a much larger house with a two car garage!
With the help and knowledge of motorbreath53 (who by the way is a Nationaly Registered paramedic!!!), I got the beam cut and turned. Id like to aquire some Thing spindles, but again, time and money....

| Not a 72 doesn't have moon shape vents behind the rear side windows. Late 60's maybe |

My favorite part is the "speed holes" on the fenders of the one piece.... and....GREEN MACHINE? really?
But I suppose, when there is Coors in pic with your baja bug as well as 4 different trophy antlers on the garage wall, it is perfectly acceptable to try and name it as if it were a monster truck.... |

| Beer preference aside, keep posting progress pics... you have a good start to a project baja there. Just don't go getting butt hurt from a little ribbing. 8) |

| One thing I learned today and saw was that you can use the thing spindles but for your lower arm you can reuse it and just get a thing ball joint pressed in. I learn there is nothing wrong with a ball joint front end as alot of people dont limit the travel and end up breaking the ball joint but the thing ball joint are a little bit bigger. Maybe i should post a new thread. |

I know its all in good fun! I should have seen that coming! More pics to come soon as work progresses, but moving should slow me down a little bit. Anyone wanna earn some free beer and pizza this weekend......not Coor's.......!! |

| Does anyone know how to find out the year of a vw short of going into the DMV? I tried those online sites, but anything pre-1981 is not on record. Like I said before, the PO said its a '72 but obviously wrong like strohma said, no vents behind the rear glass. Ive yet to register it and am more curious than anything. |

Try Wolfsburg West's website. Or post the Vin and someone will tell you. The pan could be a 72 and the body could be different, so post both.
Good luck. |

I got this exhaust at the Big 3 Day Swap Meet last weekend, a little surface rust but has since cleaned up pretty nicely with a little wire-wheelin'. Flanges are stout but the collector is rotten. Motorbreath want to attempt a custom fab, but buying a new one might be easier (but not as fun!!). $5 took it, not bad i dont think...
