| My girlfriend and I have been debating on what would be the best way to move from Fl to Az. She owns a business training people to ride horses for show. One problem she has is she doesn't own a truck and it would seem to be a very use tool in her profession. My thought was to purchase a truck and trailer and load up the bug and all of my possesions and drive there. That way i'll have a reliable means of transport when I get there (which is going to be necessary since I just found out we're having twins) and she'll have the availability of the truck for her job. An even better plus is I wont have to rely on a crappy U-haul truck. I've mentioned this idea to a couple of people with some mixed responses. If you were in my shoes, what would you do? |

| i couldnt imagine anyone going thru life without some kind of truck, especially if i were hauling horses around. i guess it comes down to what you can afford. |

| if you are getting mixed responses, then let her pay for all u-haul, gas, etc. then when she complains about not being able to haul horses..just look at her with a mixed response. |

Anything "rental" is a roll of the dice. I have moved coast-to-coast way to damn many times an spent a lot of times stuck on the side of the highway. My last big move, besides moving here was, from D.C. to Northern California. I blew the motor in the U-Haul half way and had to change trucks. after unloading in Calif, I had to leave the second truck smokin' on the side of the highway. I called a friend to take me to the San Fran airport so I wouldn't miss my flight.
Buy a truck or something that can tow stuff and get a "good" trailer. You can always sell them later if you need. |

The mixed responses aren't comming from her. She's all for the truck idea. The negativity is comming from people at work, parents, mechanic, etc. |

How much use you think a woman pregnant with twins is going to have for a pickup truck in the next year? Sorry, but that truck is just going to be an expense and a headache for the immediate future.
Rent a truck and keep your money in tact, you're going to need it more than a pickup. |

That was my concern. I don't want to be broke down in the middle of nowhere with some crappy rental. My friend did the truck and trailer idea when he moved here from Ok. When he got here, he sold both of them and actually made close to $1,000. I could sell the trailer and keep the truck. I don't want to be carrying twins in the back of the bug. |

Thats the response i've been hearing ALOT of. Her job doesn't require much strenuous work so she thinks she'll be ok. Most of the manual labor is done at the shows and i'll be there to help with that. I appreciate your opinion. |

| My opinion is that you shouldn't have gotten her pregnant when you're not married. Now make it right. |

Agreed. I'm trying. First step is selling my house in Fl, moving out there, and getting a job and house in Az. It's going to be a busy year for me  |

Moving sucks! :x
Rent it! If it gets smoked, it's insured and their loss. Buy a decent rig once in the west! 8)
I hauled my ass in a u-haul truck loaded to the hilt and towing a "piggyback" trailer with my bus ALSO loaded with parts, from Tampa all the way to San Diego. Had no issues whatsoever though I did see at least a couple of others either broke down or in the process of breaking down while on my way. :? Good luck! 8) |

Rent the truck and move... U haul has replaced 75 percent of it's fleet in the last two years so you only get a POS older truck if you don't put your foot down when you rent it. DO NOT sign off on any truck until you get to inspect it.... if they won't let you find another outlet that will.
Pennske and Budget are options too.
Buy a vehicle ( truck /SUV what ever) when you get there.... save on repairs if what you bought out East breaks down on the haul etc... a lot can happen with a good used truck and trailer on the way. And you will save coin on paperwork and transfer title reg hassles time spent etc. |

I've never moved cross country but I've had quite a few friends and family do it.
1 friend bought a used truck and trailer, had it inspected by a mechanic. was driving from South Carolina to Cali. 1/4 of the way here the trailer axle snapped. Had to rent another trailer. 3/4 of the way here the engine blew on the truck, had to rent a uhaul. I would say thats a horrible experience.
Everyone else I know has rented from Penske or Uhaul. Got the Insurance, it has the roadside assistance and everything. you don't have to worry about a thing and don't have to buy a truck and trailer and switch the title and everything and then have to do it all over again when you get to your destination.
I would rather have another company have to worry about the truck/trailer breaking down than worrying about the new/used truck and trailer you just bought breaking down and you fronting the bill.
With going with a rental truck the vehicle is covered and in some insurance your stuff is covered.
I rented a uhaul truck once and it got a flat tire, in the process of it getting a flat tire the stuff I was moving shifted horribly and my tv was broke and some of my furniture broke. The insurance that I paid 13.95 covered all of it and I got new furniture and a new tv. If I would've been in my own truck, my shit would've been lost.
Pretty much, rent the truck and trailer and buy something when you get out to your location... |

I'm trying to do the math on the logistics on that-
Drive bus #1 one mile, walk back home, drive bus #2 one mile past bus #1, walk back home, drive bus #3 one mile past bus #2, repeat... it would be a lot faster with just two buses. |
