I was driving my 72 westy tonight. The stock ignigiton (on the steering column) I assume is kind of messed up. In order to start my bus, I must first put the key in the steering column to the on position. Then I have to turn a key (which I think is aftermarket) on the left to start the engine. Tonight I was driving without the column key turned. The steering wheel would not turn left or right. What would cause this. Does the steering wheel lock if the key on the column is not turned. I cannot get the key in the column to turn. My bus is stuck in the straight position, In a parking lot. Is this because the key on the column is not turned? Is the steering wheel supposed to lock like this? Thank youa and I need the help soon becuase it is 3 A.M. and my bus is stuck. I dont want to tow it, but if I have to I have too. Thanks

P.s. I cannot get the key in the steering column to turn, even if I turn the wheel.

Never mind the emergency. I found my spare key, and go figure, at 4 in the morning, it decided to work. I walked to the bus (because Im not a quitter) and tried the spare key in the column ignition. It worked eventuually. I am still wondering though if steering wheel lock is normal if the key is not turned on my 72 Westy. I feel very good that I got it home and did not have to pay for towing, but at the same time, is the steering wheel lock normal. I am getting new keys soon, so hopefully this will fix my problems. Thanks for any info. The samba is great.

Yes, your bus has a steering lock. And yes, you have to have the key on to unlock the wheel. Perhaps you should dismantle it and lube it a little.

Worst case scenario, Leave the column UNLOCKED by holding the key in place with a wire tie, hemp cord, love beads or...and use the spare key for the doors.
Just a thought.
