  View original topic: Bus gearshift

After 6 years of Bus ownership, the gearshift just stopped working. It would go under the dash. Turned out the coupling it went into popped out or something. A friend helped me fix it. He said it was the reason he got rid of his VW.

So tonight I'm driving home and I shift into third gear and it feels a little weird then it happens again 18 months later.

Why does this happen?

My transmission works fine, no clutch slipping, Bus drives fine and WAS shifting beautifully.

Hey Chabanais:

I hade the same problem on my 72. It turned out that the two 10mm bolts holding the limiting stop bracket on the front of the tranny were loose. I torqued them up and the bus shifted fine. This may not be the problem but I would give it a look see.

Also, I am not getting your E-mails. I turned off the filter so that might help. Dont forget the underscore between by names.

Hope this helps

Jeff,

I sent you one yesterday. Ok, I'll try it again now!

Climb under the bus and check ALL of the couplings, buses have several. There is a coupling at the nose of the trans- replace the factory bushings with new urethane and make sure it is torqued. Make sure all of the wire ties are still in place and that the retaining screws are snug. There is a bushing in the front of the linkage that often rots and/or falls out. West Coast Metric makes replacement nylon ones that last longer. Definitely check the shift plate- once you get it set, you can take one screw out at a time and use a little locktite on it to secure it.

Before the gearshift was really sloppy. A knitting needle in apple sauce. Now it feels like that of a new car. Guess that was the problem.

Loose striker plate bolts, worn guide sleeve, bad selector forks, loose stop limiter bolts???

Hey Chabanais what did you do to tighten up you shifting? Mine is also really sloppy. Was it just that bushing?

Well I didn't do anything, the garage did. See I don't even have a driveway so it's tough to work on my car. They tightened everything down and re-lubed it all. The existing hardware was fine. But about 2 years ago I put in a new bushing.
