I got an old T4 FI in a 76 westy. The engine has set for years and before parked it just wouldn't start(thats what the last owner said). So I'm trying at it and I noticed the compression is all off so the valves aren't set, right? It has spark and cranks over slowly... new tune up already (cap, rotar, wires etc.) old gas ,but I can't drain the tank with out pulling it out and thats way too big. Can I pull the fuel line some where? or feed the elc. pump from a different source of fuel to test the engnine?I want to check the valve settings or reset them and I don't know where to start? and how to set the timming or at what? please help if you help it will be life or death for this westy "ol yeller" (He needs your help)!
err at least I need help!

Depends on what u mean by compression is off. What are the readings? Is there some real low, or all just are different? Adjust the valves and try it again and see what the findings are. You can drain the tank by disconnecting the fuel line going to the pressure regulator(behind tin on pass side. Just be prepared, it's a gusher. I always clamp the line with vice grips first so I dont get covered in gas. you could run jumper wires from the battery to the fuel pump. Leave the key off, hook the wires to the battery first, then crawl underneath by the ful pump. Hook up the positive wire, then just touch the ground wire and see if it does anything. You should be able to hear or feel it working. An even easier method would be to get a fuel pressure tester though. Good luck!

I'd drain the tank by disconnecting the line coming out of the tank on the driver's side, before it goes into the first filter, or if you want a longer line, before the fuel pump, then change the filter. If you want to use another tank or container to test the engine, you need to remember there is a fuel return line on the pass. side, and it pumps the gas through pretty quick. I used a two litre pop bottle, and it would empty in less than a minute. I just let it go into the regular tank, but you could use a longer fuel line and put it into the container you're drawing from. A good thing to get if you're going to stick with aircooled vw's is the Muir Idiot's Guide. It'll give you a good start on understanding how it all works, and give procedures for doing the whole tuneup. Jeremy
