I want to get a new auto for a 73 bay. This bay didn't come stock like this though. I can get a tranny ,but how good are they I hear sticks out last them? And what is the newer auto called vs. auto sticks the known bad ones. I think the good auto's came out in 75 bays? The wife can't drive a stick so it kinda is important if I can make this work. I really need reliability! and long lasting so if sticks are that tough and are better fuel eco well I guess thats that.

Auto sticks in the Beetles are not the same as automatics in the busses. Bus automatics are fully operational automatics. I think the 1974 and earlier bus autos were vacuum shift while the 1975 and later were centrifugal which basically meant they shifted based on engine RPM rather than vacuum. I have had several late autos and never had a problem with them. If your 73 bus did not come with an auto then there is a chance it may have a transplant trans from a later bus. I put a compled automatic 1979 drivetrain in a manual 1974 for an older lady once because she was tired of the clutch. She was 76 and still went camping, but she had a bad hip and couldn't use the clutch.
