Anyone know the best way to clean up the engine/engine compartment in a '72 Westfalia?

My mechanic used to offer steam cleaning. Pulled the engine and nuke it all with cleaning stuff.

I have tried the so called engine cleaner degreaser in aerosol can doesn't work very good though and it stinks real bad. Castrol purple cleaner hands down comes in spray bottles and gallon jugs. It is a little nasty though do not breath! And do not let sit on paint and if you have any way to use hot water will help. Have not ever steam cleaned but if you can get it done reasonable go for it just be careful if using high pressure.

Simple Green (found at any hardware store), scrub brush(es), hot water.. spray it on straight... let it sit, scrub, rinse off and repeat until clean. Be careful where you spray the hose... cover your carb(s) and distributor, etc. You do NOT want water in your case! Biodegradable... safe.. works for me. Elbow grease is also key. Good luck.

Oh yeah forgot about good old Simple Green the military even uses this or at least they used too. Right on advice about covering ignition etc.
