| I'm replacing my tired leaky motor (long block) in my 71 bus and looking for any suggestions on what to get and where to look. Everybody and their brother sells rebuilt longblocks. I'm going to keep the pict 3 carb and already have good ignition etc. Just replacing the bottom end with 1600-1641cc with new heads etc...Keep in mind I'm on the other coast from most of you...any suggestions appreciated |

If it were I, I'd find my closest aircooled VW shop/outlet and get references
for a local engine builder rather than large GEX type outfit. I like stock 1600 maybe 1641 but, that's me (less to go wrong). Getting a good longblock from someone others have had good experiences with makes the most sense. You always want to try to be with-in easy engine transporting distance lest a problem arises. I realize how generic and common sense type reponse this is, but you'd be suprised how many people cause themselves huge problems by forgetting the basics. |
