fixed it, that's clean

OK type 1 guy here. My brother just got a 72 with the pancake. I was just getting to know how my type 1 engine works and he brings this home. I was wondering what the tube in front of the alternator pulley with the yellow tape covering it is and what its supposed to be hooked up to. Is that the blowby that feeds into the aircleaner? Is it the oil filler and just needs a cap? This is the first pic I saw with it visible and was wondering if someone could tell me what it does.
That tube is the oil filler tube which gets a plastic oil filler with screw top. It attaches by slipping over the tube and its held on by a ring clip. Should be lots of pics here that you can see the parts.

Thanks Bleyseng. I usually just use search function to find what I need here, but I knew you guys would come through. Doesn't help if you don't know what to call it.

Not the prettiest engine, but it is a good working type 4 to type 1 conversion.

Totally guts-less, but gets excellent gas millage when theres no hills around.

Uses a weird Italian carburetor, looks like a Solex.

Just for the record I didn't do this conversion, but who ever did went all out.

Well there you have it. A nice type 4 to type 1 conversion (its actually a type 3 case).

Not bad, you'll want to push those rubber flanges on the spark plug insulators down so they seal against the tin though, precious cooling air is escaping there.

78 with 2.0L, 41X34 valves, 7.5 to 1 compression, Raby 9550 cam, Mallory Unilite, Thunderbird extractor.

Nice to see those heat riser covers in place, too.

Most engines are missing these.

How does that extractor work for you?

busman78 Wed Mar 11, 2009 6:10 pm

The Thunderbird is great, one of the easiest fitting extractors I have ever installed.

what conversion tin is that?

jah_B Tue Mar 17, 2009 1:44 pm

Been meaning to do this....thanks for the reminder Eric!

This is before swapping out the the diz, spark plug wires, and before the HEs, re-fitting the tins, new fuel and vacuum lines, CHT sensor, and some additional duct work....but you can see where I was headed...I'll post some pics of the post-install from last Sunday.

Hammered silver on the outside, hi temp black on the underside. All self etching primered first...we'll see how it holds up.

Man they look so simple when you get rid of the original fuel system and the aux fan.

This is the last shot of the Road Warrior's engine in the wrecking yard in Castle Rock CO on August 17,2009 at 588,238 miles. Started right up, but could not select a gear because the clutch pedal and frame had been bunted rearward.

What's that big box with the Wolfsburg crest, some kind of air cleaner?
