Thinking of taking a vacation the week before July 4th so we will have 12 days or so. Taking the wife and her parents (who are really cool people).
Her father is kind of a travel guide, so he can hook us into cool specific spots to visit once we decide on a general location to go.
I am thinking either west to Montana (glacier natl park), the PNW, or up east from Boston through Maine. Outdoors activity is fine, but I am also one to be known to belly up to a bar all day and hang with locals. I also enjoy fishing and she likes to hike.
Let me know if anyone has any recommendations. |

| Not the areas you specified but....NJ Shore!!! that is the perfect time of year. The water is getting warm and the bennies aren't around for the most part until the 4th weekend(or however the hell it falls) Go to Long Beach Island and it can be remote in some spots and you can rent a boat and cruise to Island Beach State Park and do some fishing and not be bothered. Plenty of bars to belly up to also on LBI. Also from LBI you can hit the Atlantic City casinos if that is your thing as well as see some comedy shows or concerts down there too. Or head to NYC or Philly for a day(perhaps if it rains) as you are about an hour and 30 from NYC and less than that to Philly. |

ahem! isn't "bennie" slang for "tourist from philly"?
hit the olympic peninsula or western canada. only a few bennies have been there, ever. |

i think Philly tourists are "shoobies" due to the wearing of shoes on the beach. "bennies" are people from Bayonne, Elizabeth, Newark and ? Hence the taking of each first letter from the town they are from to get the word "Benny". I consider a "benny" anyone north of the big bridge on the Garden State Parkway(which ironically includes myself now). Most true bennies have the leather sandals and black sox and are as pale as Casper the Ghost. i could go on and on about bennies but ....

as far as a vacation if you leave early and hit Litchfield CT on Fathers day, you will catch a great show and then you can hit Massachusetts and points north. |

| If you go the Northeast route, a stop at Cape Cod would satisfy the fishing and bar urges well enough. You could visit the site of the first transatlantic radio transmission, ride a scenic railroad, visit a beach or camp out if the desire strikes. |

If you're into good beer like me, Oregon is the place to go. Some great fishing and hiking places about too.

Been to Yosemite? Mono Lake? Portland, OR?
The drive from the Columbia gorge down 97 to Crater Lake is amazing.
I hear the oregon coast is awesome too but I've only been in as far as Brookings.
Highway 89 from Shasta City in NorCal to Tahoe is awesome too. |

You will want to come to Nebraska. We have flat land, no mountains not very many trees. some cows and lots of corn. Every vacationers favorite things.
I love the Durango Co. area. Lots of fun and great senery. |

Lots of options there. I stayed in Glacier in '06 on our RV tour, did the WHOLE west coast, and I agree the Oregon coast is great. I would not want to stay in Glacier for more than a few days however.
If you choose New England, consider Maine. The Maine coast is really cool, from Kittery to Bar Harbor. VERY different from any other part of the east coast. Acadia national park has some great hiking, good golf course in the area, deep sea fishing, boating and lots of bars with real character...
Good luck... |

| Try Muir Woods north of Frisco, Scotty's castle in Death Valley, and Gammons Gulch Benson Arizona (cool ghost town and movie set). All three are different from the usual vacation spots, and quite enjoyable. |

What's a vacation? Gotta find a full-time job to pay for it first! You'd think a master's degree would count for something....
