Just wondering how many SambaFolks have their own personal website (preferably VW oriented). I'm not talking photo sites like Picasa, Webshots, etc., or blogsites or stuff like MySpace. What I'm interested in is ***.com or ***.net type sites with your own URL, email, etc. and a site that you designed yourself.
Post up your URL and comments like what web host, site builder, etc you use.

www.thebugshop.org A bit old and tired, but a usable tech resource that hobbyists still seem to enjoy.
www.zarwerks.com A hobby-business launched with Jim Bremer in 2003. Lots of fun, allows me to buy some cool (outrageously overpriced) VW parts. Seems to have helped a few folks complete restos of early cars.
http://thebugshop.org/othersites/airspud/airspud_home.html Air Spud, hosted at thebugshop. The most fun you can have with $18 of PVC from Home Depot and an air compressor. |

www.vwsage.com I update it about once each month, and some of the entries are works in progress.

I use WordPress as a content manager. It works for my needs quite well.

I started a .com in 1996 with three buddies from college and my father. We were website designers, among other things. In 1996 even the coke.com and pepsi.com domain names were not registered. There were only a handful of people advertising on the web, and our goal was to be one of the first consultancies on internet advertising.
We had a decent business plan, and we lasted about 1.5 years. We were facing the inevitable requirement of needing an infusion of cash to grow and aquire big ticket clients.
We had a vote and venture cap funding was decided against. To this day, I regret that decision we collectively made and I could be retired by now.
Here is our website in 1996 cached on the Wayback machine...

Stock Motor Challenge website
The Official 100kmh Club website
2 ideas i came up with to try and generate more 1/4 mile drag racing participation from acvw owners with stock motors. friendly, inviting, easy to enter and open to anyone anywhere that owns a stock motored acvw that wants to have some fun & race!!!!
i google searched "free websites", found this option, designed it myself and so far it's been trouble free and very user friendly. i know it's not the prettiest site out there and it doesnt have alot of the bells & whistles, but it gets the job done. |

Here's a few of my personal sites.
My local VW club: The North Alabama Volkswagen Club (just redesigned!)
The site I did for our VW shop: Airkooled Kustoms
This is my personal bug blog site: Bug Bytes
And finally this one is my freelance website: DWM Design (there are some Volkswagen drawings in my portfolio)
I wrote most of those sites myself, except for Bug Bytes. For that one I took the Blogger template and hacked the snot out of it to make the pumpkin-rific site it is now. I've tried WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) web editors but they usually hose the code down with lots of extra markup. I do use GoLive for site management, but I'm trying to pickup Dreamweaver now.
All but the NAVWC are hosted on Cedant.com. Prices are ok, service is not too bad. I love their online control panel that lets me update and change files remotely and the offer free plug-ins like guestbooks, blogs, and forums. |
