I wonder if there is a known record for 1940's VW's at a U.S. Show?
Maybe that was a new record?
What was great was to be able to compare the 48s and 47s side by side to each other to see if there was differences. Not too often you get to do that here in the U.S. |

I've obscured the face of the last participant (A samba regular) as I don't have permission to post his mug..............)
The flakey white split is Chuck P's latest find, a '48 pulled out of a barn in upstate NY. Check out those @@RARE@@ bumpers!!!

No didn't beat Norwalk 2000 (20 or 21), but it is plain to see that there are easily enough splits in the Northeast to beat it. Steve Mierz was expected but we didn't see him (nor his split). If you Kev and a Dave H (who I heard trailered his zwitter to the Maine show... so what's up with the axle issues???) had made it we would have broken it.
Alex brings up a good point, FIVE 40s splits at a show? IN the US, where has that happened before????[/i] |

Nice, well run show (as usual). =D> Show weather was relatively mild too.
Left the show about 12:30 pm to try to beat the incoming storms for the return trip to Delaware. Kept the top down until mid-NJ and then it started to rain a bit. Went through a steady rain until I hit Philadephia, then it poured for about 10 miles (hate driving the Heb in the rain). Then it cleared up until I pulled into the garage about an hour later. Literally two minutes after I put the garage door down, the skies opened up and it came down in buckets for the next half hour. Still not bad though - about 250 miles in about 5 hours, 20 minutes and that includes a stop to put the top up and a gas stop.
Always good to see old VW friends. And of course, it's good to see that more and more old VW's are coming out of the wood work...especially on the east coast.

..... Literally two minutes after I put the garage door down, the skies opened up and it came down in buckets for the next half hour. .....
Exactly the same thing happened to me. I drove through a few "spritzes" showers along the way, then 10 mins from home it got real dark, as soon as I shut down the engine outside the shop I heard a rumble of thunder, opened the door and pulled in and 3 mins later it was biblical rains.... for the next 3-4 hours on an off.
Nice ride home, I can't slide the ragtop closed from inside the car (well, not while driving anyway) so I was glad to go open top all the way home... |

| Looks like it was an awesome time. My son and I were driving our '50 there when we had car trouble on the highway, so never made it. Wish I hadn't let mysef get talked out of flat-towing it--hindsight! |

| I wish I wasn't sick, I even took time off of work for this... I guess there is always next year. Or everyone that couldn't make it could bring their cars to the All aircooled gathering in Flanders, NJ this septimber! |

| Many thanks for you fellow splitters for bringing your cars out. I know for many of you it was big effort. Our car count at the desk for VWs was 260 and at the gate was 309. Go figure. A 309 paid car count was one of the bigger Terryville shows to date. Attendance , same as last year basically. Swap meet 50 vendors. Chuck P |

Definitely an excellent turn out despite the rain that was forecast. Dan A definitely deserves the outstanding courage award for suredly driving the rarest split the longest distance, in uncertain conditions! Looks like a few surprise show ups too among the lineup?
With such a range of 40's-50's splits did anyone MC a pass and review of this gathering? Bill Collins did one at the last split window reunion at Terryville in 2000 and it was really well received, its always a great opportunity to inform others about how special/unique these earliest cars are.
When I attended the Terryville 2000 split window reunion I seem to recall that it was the actual record and not at Norwalk, we all received a nice trophy placque from that event, so maybe thats why I'm thinking it was the actual record? Any similar commemorative item from this gathering? But would be nice to know for certain once and for all what year, number, and event actually set the record? There are definitely alot more splits in the northeast to best any prior record, as I know of somewhere between 7 to 10+ or so splits in a 40 mile or so radius from just me here that didn't attend.
Also did that 55' dressed kdf military car make it an unofficial 19, and was it the same one that drove into Litchfield in June? I seem to recall the Litchfield car was also some kind of an AFrika corps dressed oval?
With everything that Chuck has to do already its great he dusted off this concept of hosting the split reunion again. Perhaps it will help lead to greater attendance in the coming years. I came away with many great jam packed ideas from the incredible rally Geoff A and I were at last weekend, these might help draw an even greater reunions in the years ahead, so will be sure to forward these ideas over to Chuck. Keep those pictures coming and lets see some nice closeups! |

Great pictures, can't believe I couldn't get to any of the big Northeast shows this year.
johnshenry wrote: Alex brings up a good point, FIVE 40s splits at a show? IN the US, where has that happened before????[/i] I think the SoCal vintage meet last year had about five or six and a Schwimm.

| Every split in attendance received a 7 x 9 wall placque for the event. The enscription read "Split Window Reunion". No addmission charged for the car or driver of the splits. At least 2 broke down on the way there. Also 2 more promised but no show. When I figured how many could have attended I got to the low 30s number wise. Maybee this will get some people motivated to start bringing them out again. ChuckP |

Yes definitely Chuck. The free admin and no judging was a good incentive I thought. Perhaps next time we give this a whirl we can couple it with a Saturday driving event of some kind, reduced overnight accommodations, etc.. I would have done that this year, but I was committed to something else the week prior and had only Saturday to get my '50 running.
Perhaps another year you could try to highlight another model/era, "Oval-Fest", Ghia Gathering, T^3 (Type Two Treffen), etc, to give other genres a moment in the spotlight.
Lots of possibilities....
Again, thanks for the usual well run show too!!! |

The KDF car was a different car than the one that was at Litchfield. Was great to see them all and for ours to see it's sister again. Had a good time on Saturday night talking to people interested in them as we had ours and Jim's 47 next to us. Saturday is the one time we get to just chill though I had to be on stand by in case of any need for the trailer and truck back in it's town (happily there was no need).
Thanks again Chuck as always and Guy for starting all this. |
