| Looks like it would be almost 200 miles for me, so that would require some planning, I've never driven the beast that far. It was an adventure driving on 287 going to the All Aircooled Gathering last year. |

It's about a 250 mile drive for me but it's always a laid-back, well-run show. Yeah, count me in.

I may be wrong, but didn't Terryville of 2000 end up *eclipsing by one car* the previous split Bugs record at Norwalk 2000 (see John's picture below)?
Anyone have any Terryville 2000 pictures posted anywhere?
Ah the good ol' days. Believe it was either Terryville 99' or 2000 which was the record. The really active DKF guys at the time were really working the phone lines to get many other split owners to come out that seldom did. Bill Collins MC'd a great pass and review of the cars at the time that included my 50' deluxe at the time, one of the nicest features of past shows you seldom see any more.
The count as I recall was 17 or 18, maybe higher. I recall there was only 1 non-running split there, the goal was trying to beat out the west coast attendance record held at the time which I recall was around 15. I'll have to ask Bill Collins if he has the exact numbers next time I see him, maybe someone else reading along has the info, it also might be in one of the HotVWs show feature stories too.
Hard to imagine now setting a record today that would anywhere just match the number of running cars that were there, but its always fun to catch up with folks that haven't been out with a split in awhile, myself included. Not sure what will be in the new barn this year though, might have a second split coming in, and/or my 50 ragtop may be sold, plus there may also be a 356 on the near horizon this year. Too much up in the air to predict in time for August. But I surely can't wait for summer to arrive after this winter.

How are you going to convince Clay to drive his empty trailer east to Mass., back to CT with your split, back to Mass. again, and then back to CT empty? |

Gary,
From my recollection, it was Terryville of 2000 that bested the Norwalk 2000 muster by one car--so that would've been 16 splits (I have a vague recollection that both the Arena and Collins Hebmullers were part of that total). I also recall the non-running split that was part of the Terryville gathering, which I think was a hot rod standard Zwitter, owned by Mr. Johnson from CT. In addition to all the work that Bill Collins did to make this happen, credit is also due to Bill Silvestri, who did a lot of the leg work contacting owners, etc., for both the Norwalk and Terryville "records."
(we understand Bill's no longer a split owner, but that a certain vintage engine guru out west is now enjoying Bill's former pastel green '50 Deluxe)
Anyway, would definitely enjoy being able to get to T-ville this year with our own gnarly '50 Bug--too early to commit, but we remain hopeful at this time...

So....
John Henry 1950 11G
Kevin Wiggins 1951 11G
David Haviland 1952 11C
Craig Scheape 1950 11C (heavily modified ;-))
Steve Mierz 1950 11C
Chuck Pisconski 1950 11C
Dan Arena '49 Heb
73 Sports ???
47 Bug (that you Guy??)
There's 9 right there. Again, not that all will go, but I'm interested to see how many viable splits are in the area.
Could go, think of it this way. If we were 1 car away from breaking the record and YOUR split would put us over the edge.... would you??? |

My memory is definitely vague on the actual numbers, always seems to be some confusion there, and can't recall if anywhere else in the US ever did beat that record later on.
It was funny showing up at that Terryville show with my dad and my first 50, I sort of got this general "who is this guy and where is he from?" kind of response. I had only really talked with Jeff Aldrich (a DKF founder) a few times prior, fairly local guy who I had told earlier at an old NH vintage show that no longer exists that I had a split that I bought from Europe, so he was the guy who called me and asked me to help beat the record. Will always remember that show since it had a big influence on me later on with these cars and doing what I do here. To me this was the golden era for splits at least in New England.
Bill Collins is still around though, he is really a fascinating guy. Wiggy and I visited with him late last summer. He told us he will always own the Heb, and possibly his incredible 51 azure (blue) ragtop. My guess is that he might be done with VW shows. Too much up in the air here to tell what I might have or not have come August to show though, possibly my 61 ragtop, as Humberto Lapa is likely to come with his freshly restored beautiful 64. I'll likely attend either way just to catch up with folks.

I think so Kev, don't think he was planning to downsize that much. I think I also confused "Bill" as Bill C rather than Bill S, since it was the pastel green split Joe Ruiz bought from Bill S. |

Yes, Bill C. still owns the Heb and I believe his 51 is Dove Blue. It'd be cool if Jim P .would bring a split since I've only heard about his cars and have never seen one. I think one of the splits at Terryville was trailered from Georgia. So if everyone gets on the horn it might be possible. Find who Paul Horvath sold the coral car to. The twins have a split. Etc...

| John Henry, put me down for 47beetle and 52 Zwitter. That makes 10. Shouldn't be to hard to find 7 more. I know of 2 other splits up here and will try to talk them into coming. I'll call Geof A. and see if he will bring the 50. 250 miles from here is about 6hours drive in a split. Good to see Dan drive his Heb to the show. may want to to set something up for Sat. night. 2. Kevin Wiggins 1951 11G
3. David Haviland 1952 11C
4. Craig Scheape 1950 11C (heavily modified Wink)

8. Guy '47 11C
9. Guy '52 Zwitter
73 Sports ??? What do you have?
Jim P, trailer your '47 out there, then we can dump it off at my place on the way back........... ;-)
So who else was there in 2000? Bill C had a car there, I can see Bill Pickering's red split on the end, I think Paul H had a neat grey standard then, didn't he? I know that one is long gone from the east coast... |
