I've got a 52 11C zwitter. It was owned by Lake Underwood for a long time. It changed hands a few times and I picked it up a couple of years ago, and got it back on the road. The car has not been restored, just repaired to get everyting functional. It's not too pretty, but all the numbers match.

johnshenry Mon Mar 03, 2008 7:45 pm

Pretty is not required, split window is.

Dave H what does Steve Hammond have? He was finishing up a split, wasn't he??

p horvath Mon Mar 03, 2008 7:51 pm

steve has his 50 standard for sale this past summer. he was working on a 49 when i went to look at his 50.

johnshenry Mon Mar 03, 2008 8:02 pm

I think so Kev, don't think he was planning to downsize that much. I think I also confused "Bill" as Bill C rather than Bill S, since it was the pastel green split Joe Ruiz bought from Bill S.

Yes, sorry for the confusion--I forgot that Collins and Silvestri both had first names "Bill." I was referring to Bill S. as the person who sold his pastel green '50.

You're right, Dave, that was Steve Gurr's former pastel green '50--now owned (I think) by someone in the MVVC (Michigan vintage club), and I believe also THE model for the pastel green Johnny Lightening '50 Bug toy.

At least i go to terryville evrey year.

Hey the rants are closed and I was bored with the split bus forum.

I didn't know that ownership of a split window bug or participation in every Terryville event was required to be a part of this thread.

Hi, folks. The ratty, dirty black Zwitter on the left (far) end of the group shot was mine; was on a '74 pan. I sold the car 2 years later; it was for sale here on theSamba last year (painted beige) so I don't know if the new owner is in the NorthEast. I'm almost certain Garth Collins still has his '46. I think the criteria for that meet was that "any" true split was welcome, running or not. The DeGetto (sp.?) bros. from NJ had one in the line up; they tend to go to the Englishtown NJ meet in April.

No Jim--we'll chase you out if you dare show up with a split vert.

The full list of Norwalk 2000 splits gathering participants is published in the September 2000 DKF news (complete with accompanying Rome panoramic photo), archived ad: http://www.vvwca.com/archives/

Anyone know how to contact those other NJ guys--Borchers, Capwell? Does Humberto own a split these days? I will pass along a note to Mr. Oakes from NY who may have (sorry, memory fade) brought his blue crotch-cooler '52 to the Terryville 2000 "record-breaking" gathering.

The former Metz car still in NJ?

Who know if those cars are still around...

Proves anyway, that there are enough splits in the North East to break this record. If there is enough enthusiasm, phone calls, "COME ON! Get that old VW out there, be part of a record!" ribbing.... it could happen....

What do you think?

That article in the DKF News Letter from Sept 2000 is pretty good....

UZI Wed Mar 05, 2008 8:49 am

what about "the people pleaser"?

johnshenry Wed Mar 05, 2008 8:51 am

AHHHH! I'm ashamed, how could I forget!? Thanks UZI, if we go for this, you are expected!!

You overlooked Jeff Aldrich on the possibles list, I dropped him a voicemail Monday to give him a heads up, trying to meet up with him also late next week, will see if he will consider it. Still over 5 months away though.

May I respectfully suggest that the Johnny Lightning car isn't Bill Silvestri's old '50 (the picture you chose to reference), but rather Steve Gurr's old '50 (the one that Steve Gurr trailered from Georgia to Terryville 2000, and then subsequently sold to the Michigan person)? So I assume you're now the owner? Good for you--very cool car! AND you have an official Johnny Lightning miniature to go along with it--how cool is that?!

My knowledge of the former Bill Silvestri '50 is that Bill bought it from someone in the Golden Gate Chapter VVWCA, and that now, as has been previously mentioned, it is again on the west coast, owned by "Mr. Okrasa."
