Happened to see the word "Pop" (soda) come up in a post and thought with such a diverse group here I wonder what other regional words others would like to share.

Y'all keep it nice!

"Yous' guys" if very popular one around me, doesn't matter if it is men or women.

Dunebubby Sun Mar 02, 2008 8:47 am

Things here are still "Sick" and "Sweet" but no longer,"phat" or "dope".At our house things are still "Hella" cool but I may be the only one regionally carrying on the tradition, currently.

I had a buddy rant for a half hour once about how the term is technically "Hell of" cool.Yeah,whatever.

"All y'all" as the plural of y'all.

When I first met Everett I noticed he said "highway" where I said "freeway". Must be a norcal/socal thing?

We don't say "freeway" in Massachusetts either. Usually we only hear it when referring to West Coast roads.

Here in the midwest, a highway is any paved road.
Freeways, are divided highways with limited access and no toll booths, that are built by the State.
And then there are Interstates. Divided highways with limited access, and built by the feds.

All slang used on the samba.com.

I've always liked the word "haul" when talking about getting a ride somewhere. "Can you haul my friends and I to school in the morning?"

In my area people like to substitute "for" instead of "at" when referring to a time.

I have a doctor's appointment "for" 10:00.

I'm from Pittsburgh too. Other phrases you hear there:

Gum bands - rubber bands

Bedclothes - sheets and blankets

Cupboard - closet

Buccos - the baseball team

Slippy - wet roads are slippy

Red Up - to clean up

Or, from the 1960s:
"We had 'em all the way"

"Same old Steelers"

Pocketbook = Purse

People who live in the PNW only say "you bet" when asked to do something, and are instantly identified as such when using that term anywhere else in the US. According to many folks in the South and East, the United States also ends at California. There is no Washington and Oregon (or British Columbia for that matter  ).
