View original topic: What to expect in racing this spring/summer?
Robert12 Sun Mar 02, 2008 10:49 am

I am new to racing, and think about trying to pick up a few race this spring in summer, and I have always just drag raced a street car at test and tunes, never any thing competition, and I am trying to get a heads up of what to expect at races, like pit inspections, buy in's, registration, so I don't show up to my first race and not be able to race because I don't have something or something on my car is not right.

Right now I am expecting to run in the Pro Class (7.50-9.49) not expecting to go faster then that right now.

I will be racing on the east coast so most racing are www.sevwa.com events which are stating they are IHRA.com techs at the races but don;t know what thats going to mean to me

Any help is appreciated, if you could respond here or email me at Soccertrain69@yahoo.com it would be appreciated

Thanks
Robert

Hey Robert12, I too hope to be finished to start running in the SEVWA mid summer and do not know what to expect.

I have raced in IHRA before in V8 cars, but never in a VW. My concern is on front brakes. I am going to run spindle mount wheels with no front brakes. IHRA rules state that unless you are running a dragster you need to have front brakes. Or unless you run a parachute. I am shooting for low 7's in 1/8 mile and just cannot see a parachute benefiting me.

Will I not make it through inspection?

Most tracks will want to see a helmet that has a Snell 2000 or better rating.
They also want to see either factory seat belts,..... or proper dated aftermaket belts properly installed with cage.
Sometimes they want to see all the lugnuts in place.
No obvioius oil leaking from the motor. Things in general good repair with nothing loose that could fly off.

Once you break into the SuperPro class, that's when tech starts to get serious.
Visible wheel studs,
1 5/8" cage,
Dated belts,
Battery box (vented) with proper hold down
Shut-off switch
Braided lines for everything

I know NHRA rules say it must have front brakes, but I have seen cars all over (even NOPI) that run w/o front brakes.
I don't think they are sending folks home over that rule yet.

I'd love to dump my front brakes and go with spindle mounts..
However.....

I know that some tracks don't like cars rolling past the start line with thier burnouts (messes with the auto start tree). So they have "track rules" about burnouts.
Rear-only brakes makes it real hard to stop before the start line.

Registration fees can vary by event, but should be posted ahead of time. Prior to running on the track, you will need to fill out a tech card & run through tech inspection. You'll need to have a helmet & seat belts (at least on the driver's side) to run at most tracks regardless of how fast or slow your car is. The tech inspector should check the date & rating on your helmet & belts (if aftermarket harness is installed) when you go through inspection. If you're doing the bracket racing, you should be prepared with shoe polish or vinyl static window numbers to mark your dial in time on the windows.

Hello everyone!

All the entries fees for the classes in an SEVWA Event are posted on our website under that specific event. We keep it the same throughout the year.
Super Pro $35
Pro $30
Sportsman $20

At most tracks, tech inspection is done by my Partner Keith, unless we have access to the Track one. But most of the time they have to refer to Keith, as they don't know what to expect from a VW.

If you have any specific questions, please PM or email me and I will get them answered.

Hope to see you at the rest of our events!

I will make sure that I come to this forum more often. Sorry I haven't been here before to answer.

You can run them in super pro (7.49 and quicker)or in pro if it runs 9.49-7.50. and no eletrontics(delay box) I think.
