Goat..I installed the same Throwout bearing last winter..it's been a beautie.

I ditched the new Bosch resistor plugs and installed a new set of the old W8CCs, checked dwell and timing. I washed and waxed her and drove around with the dog...

This last week:

Headlight rehab - Dismantled, cleaned, and put LPS-3 rust preventive and anti-seize on all the headlight rim hardware, and installed new H4 halogens. Then I got them pointed correctly at night. Quite a difference!

Also completed the installation of the refinished bumpers, with bumper guards and reflective materials.

Replaced the locking glove box door with an older non-locking one (I like those better)

Previous recent work:

- Refinished rims and mounted new RA08s all around, including spare
- Removed gas tank and refinished space under the bed with POR-15
- Replaced all fuel lines, including filler neck elbow, all vent lines, and FI lines
- Added a charcoal canister to the vent lines; original installation had tank venting to the atmosphere near a side grille
- Refinished interior rear floor
- Sealed up all the holes in the bed
- Topped up steering gear box with hypoid oil
- Drained transmission and refilled with fresh tranny oil
- New seat belts all around; now seats 5
- Cleaned some of the years of built-up dirt and grime everywhere
- Sealed holes in the floor with JB IndustroWeld, POR-15, and auto paint

Still to do:

- Fix horn
- Complete brake job
- Install new shocks
- Install VW radio
- Clean up most wiring
- Replace nose?
- Replace doors
- Door lock service all around
- Install D-Ring tie-downs around bed
- Rebuild or replace engine
- Body work on all rusted parts
- Replace windshield
- Get heat working
- Build new interior panels
- and lots more!

Installed the new Hella H4 units from Bus Depot and was very pleased with outcome.

Washed and waxed it....which was a mistake. I've been eyeballing a paint buble on the driver's side outer rocker and when waxing it, I decided to pull out the grinder and see what was under the bubble. At the time I foolishly assumed it was a little moisture trapped under the paint. That's an understatement!

YIKES  Ground off the raised area in hopes of treating it and repaint. Anyway I was peeling away at the area ended up giving me a 2' high x 4' long HOLE. Investigating further, I see how it all happened. In the back of the driver's side wheel well there was a crack on one of the seams. Appently over the last decade or so, the PO never noticed this and any water that was thrown up by the tire was "wicked" into that crack, asorbed by the insulation and ruster my rocker (inner and outer) from the inside out. Damn wax job is now going to turn into rocker replacement  Hey, on the bright side, glad I caught it before it got worse.

Installed my new windshield this morning. We're on the Cheep, so it was a chinese window but rubber from the good Bus Depot body rubber resto kit. It was still a challenge, but we were successful on our second try. We had the dashboard out to give more room, and I'm glad of it. First try we tried to finish the pull on the top, but there was just too much friction against the headliner, and it was hard to pull downward pressure on the window. Second try was starting on the top and finishing on the bottom, and though it looked pertty impossible at the last, patient strong and gentle pressure did it!
Also got the fusebox mounted back in the original spot, and the dash in place. It's very encouraging - Freebus changed from a shell to a bus again! New momontum! Will post pics later.....

re-keyed all the locks

1977_L63H_P27 Mon Nov 02, 2009 1:05 pm

I just found out my starter has been dragging this whole time. After we first got her on the road back in late July, it got to where it didn't want to start off of the key. So a little sanding/cleaning of connections and all seemed well. Then this past week it started doing the same thing. A little tap on the starter case and she'd start right up.
I just installed a starter from my FLAPS (#16300, $49.99 w/exc) and WOW what a difference. It starts instantly as soon as you turn the key. I love new parts ;)

raintheory Mon Nov 02, 2009 2:42 pm

Got one of my keys fixed so it works on both the doors and ignition, and also had a spare made (previously I had 2 separate keys, though they looked about exactly the same and should have worked with everything). All that work for $10, and the friendly VW guy (great shop near my parents, they know their stuff) even pulled a lock to give me the number for future reference! So now I have 2 all-in-one-go keys, and a ignition only key. Think I'm good in the key department for awhile!

purplegodzilla Thu Nov 05, 2009 2:45 pm

Installed front and rear 7/8 Sway bars , new Master cylinder, rebuilt Brake Booster with all new brake calipers and cylinders. So not only I can go around curve at 65mph , but I can stop on a dime too.

jmstu76 Thu Nov 05, 2009 2:51 pm

You are going to love those sway bars. I just don't like who low the rear hangs down. There used to be other companies that made a different style, but I don't think you can buy the other style anymore. :(

uiterwyk Thu Nov 05, 2009 6:20 pm

Got the bus out of the paint shop. Rims get done tomorrow and hopefuly we can get some of the windows in.

The weekend will be spent putting her all back together.

I have three "volunteers" coming to help. Any ohter volunteers would be welcome.

Robert
