fixed the broken distributor and dusted all the leaves out of the gutters and luggage rack

realized I've got rust to repair on the beltline over the sliding door track!

77VWBusDude Mon Nov 23, 2009 2:17 am

Contemplated attaching a big-ass board to the roof rack, effectively creating a built in car-port to keep it dry.

lol j/k

I AM F*CKING DONE WITH THESE HYDRAULIC LIFTERS. When the car sits more than a day they leak out more than a ninety year old man. The motor is old anyways, so I'm just going to throw in solid lifters w/ the correct pushrods and rockers and call it good. Maybe chromoly rods so I can set the gap narrower, hopefully making it 'click' less.
Shouldn't have put that used '78+ motor in it...

Desertbusman Mon Nov 23, 2009 2:38 am

While you are at it, throw in a solid lifter cam.

Why do you wear your belt on your forehead?

I think this one is cursed...I'm just going to beat on it 'til it dies, lol. Sooooo much easier to just pop the tubes out through the head(yay type 4!)and replace the lifters. My dad is getting tired of me leaving his car out in the rain while I pull motors.
I'll see how it runs...don't drive it much anyways. Can't afford to fix the rust either, and the stupid thing has two different layers of Maaco? paint, the outer red layer is falling off to reveal blue, and the jambs are still camper green, lol. Might as well make the motor a bastard too!...it might already have had a solid cam swapped into it before I got it for all I know, lol.

...You can try to convince me though, if you want, lol

*does some Samba searches

All I could find was this:

Of the two transplants, hydraulic to solid lifter requires the cam change more desperately than solid to hydraulic lifter.
The ramps are more aggressive on hydraulic cams because there is no clearance take-up that you need to cushion with a softer ramp...

...but with chromoly pushrods, which don't expand like stock ones, thus allowing a 'loose zero' lash, would it then not last a decent amount of time?
:)

Ooo, and according to this, I can even keep my hydro rockers.
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=165582

...couldn't be much worse than an aggressive street cam, no? lol

-edit-
Whoops, I guess although the chomoly pushrods don't expand like the stock aluminum ones, they don't account for the rest of the motor expanding, so once everything is hot, the gap can get to be over .010". And there's also debate that before the whole motor has a chance to warm up, the hot exhaust valves can expand first and get pushed open past zero clearance. Guess I'll stick with aluminum; Works for me, get some cheap used ones and call it good. :) Not using used lifters though, it's bad enough the cam is used, lol; Hope they break-in alright...

Oh yeah, and another reason I'm going solid: The heads are off my old motor, so they have the smaller/weaker springs, so they won't beat on everything as bad. That actually could be part of the problem; the spring not being strong enough to push the hyd. lifters down through their full bleed stroke. Oh well... Interested to see if it has more balls on the hills with the solids...

Finished getting all the windows/lights/etc in with all new seals after painting her.
Gave her H4 headlight bulbs.
Cleaned up lots of dust from the inside.
Re-installed the interior.
Took her to work to show off.

bajafreaks Tue Nov 24, 2009 7:35 pm

I've been working on the body work for the last week or so now it's ready for the final sand then spray. Gutted the interior complete and just took the windows out of the passenger door, going with all new seals, window scrappers etc. that was a chore but not too bad. Drivers side next. My goal is to have it completely repainted, new headliner, carpet, all new window seals, all new weatherstrip, and ready to roll come spring time. I'd post pics but can't figure it out. Wish me luck. Peace.

Krautski Tue Nov 24, 2009 8:34 pm

removed the aux gas line to the BN4, which started leaking and would have started a fire, and tore out the BN4 while I was at it.

vdubzen Wed Nov 25, 2009 8:16 am

New to this forum, currently restoring a 69 Bay Window. Lots of information here. Finishing up the engine rebuild but had to take a break when my daughter came over and said "Dad, my car won't stop", so I spent the last couple of days doing a brake job on her 74 bug.

Short vidclip of the testdrive today. Shot with my mobilephone in the dark (with night vision)...

Got a bunch done on my 69 Single Cab. The bed is now painted and the inside of the gates are done also. Applied the white on the roof and the belt line. Next up is to weld in the donor treasure chest floor and seal and paint it, then back mask eveything else and shoot the exterior. Going to tear down the engine that came with it this week and get ready to build the new one. The engine ran when I got it a year ago in July, but I want to be sure it's going to be dependable as I like to drive my VW's.

I got to the underside of mine today. Had to take advantage of the beautiful weather in Virginia today. There was a hastily applied black paint job underneath my bus since I bought it and I've been getting nervous about what might be under it. It was on there really thick in some places.

I scraped, sanded and wire brushed wearing a bunch of protective gear all day. Luckily I found nothing ugly under there. I cleaned the underside with Marine clean and some scrub brushes. I then POR'd the deal. I didn't quite get done the painting but will drop the heat tube and finish the middle tomorrow. Hell of a dirty job, but I'll do this only once. I'm gonna paint the underside with Black Rustoleum after I POR the middle section tomorrow.

I pulled my motor last night to replace the clutch, pp, t/o bearing, pilot bearing, and all that good stuff.

Dr. Gonzo Wed Dec 02, 2009 1:06 pm

swapped my generator out for an alternator

dti Wed Dec 02, 2009 6:50 pm

Took out the cd player to find out what kept killing the battery when it stayed parked more than a week, found that altho the stereo install was ahh interesting, it was not the real problem, still tracing stuff, looking like its in the lights in back. But I got rid of some strange wires, that's for sure...

removed a towel from all the heater vents

PO must have disliked heat, I knew the system wasn't great in these bays but mine was dreadful even after treble checking hoses, fans etc.

Whilst getting the broken milometer gear out I noticed something stuffed in the front vent.... then checked all others.

Unbelievable !
