I'm back....

After 2 years of Quads and Jeeps I just had to build another Baja Bug. This time I am going to take my time and do it right.

My project is going to be based on this 1973 Standard. More pictures to follow as this project progresses.

Needless to say I am very happy to have a Baja project back in the garage.

Here it comes, Bob... we talked about this last weekend!!

You shoulda stuck to "the plan", man!!!

veedub4life Tue Mar 04, 2008 8:51 pm

who cares its a 74! haha

DesertBob Tue Mar 04, 2008 8:52 pm

CoperBaja started it. Asking me questions and such when all I did was ask about removing some seat mounts. Its OK. Late model 1973+ cars are cheap and all around. Its not like cutting up an Oval, Convertible or a 67 or earlier car.

Chop it up already before some one else gives you crap.

Looking forward to progress. 8)

Penguin,

You just told nagabeanz not to cut his, but you tell Bob it's okay? They're both late model bugs, I don't get it. I recently bought a 74 that (on the outside) looked pretty straight, and the interior was in great shape. Closer inspection revealed quite a bit of rust. It's kind of funny looking back, 'cuz the PO said "just don't baja it", but it's mine now, and I want a baja!!! I'm with Bob, I bought a full-bodied one 'cuz I didn't want to deal with anyone else's hack job. I baja'ed it, and now I am in the process of doing suspension, and then I'll work on cosmetics. On the bright side, the interior is in good shape, everything works but the washer, it runs well, and my SO doesn't mind riding in it.

So Bob, I say cut it up!!!

Neil

nagabeanz was talking about paying off loans and what not so i factored in a few things, one he sounded like he was on a tight budget and dident need to get knee deep into a project, and two he mentioned that the bajaing was going to take place in the later future, he should still look for other acceptable donors. no ones going to cry about him cutting up a late model but common sense says that he should just leave it be. it looks nice man.

Project "Short Term" Goal

• Build a tough Dual-Sport Baja bug that can travel in Desert terrain over long distances and be very reliable.

• The Baja will be street legal and comfortable inside. Everything will work – yes even the heater.

• 7 Piece Baja kit will be used. I need the trunk area for storage of parts and stuff. No back seat as this area will be used for storage of camping equipment.

• Motor will be based on a stock 1600DP.

• type 1 IRS Transmission will be re-geared for 30-31” tires.

• Suspension will not be long or mid travel – front will be based on a Thing beam and rear will be stock. Shocks will be Bilstein Class 11.

• Class 11 cage will be tied into the front beam/bumper and the rear bumper and transmission mounts.

Over time who knows - after all this is my "Last" baja.

sounds like tons of fun...
why are you anti-bus trans? By the time you've spent money on the regearing and rebuilding of the type 1, your at at least $500-600 right? at least? 002 from Rancho with welded/close 3-4 $900ish, and with the motor/tire combo your talking, it would be BULLETPROOF.

Not anti-bus trans by any means. I understood that if I went bus I would need to change the CV's, Axles, and Stubs. Without a 002 core a Rancho built bus trans is more in the $1100-$1200 range. Or am I missing something? I want to get this car on the trail as quick as I can because we need to sell the Jeep to get a econo car for one of my daughters. Don't want to be without a dirt toy so I am trying to get as much done as quickly as I can. Oh and in the past all of the bus trans cars I have driven in have a gear whine I find annoying. Skidmark's car was the exception because we were going so fast I didn't have the time to listen to the trans.

alright.....alright.... i've got nothing to argue on that one... it would cost more... guess it comes down to weighing the cost vs. benefit idea....since your not shooting for huge travel in the front, it may not make much since to build the rear much bigger... still plenty stronger though.

As for the gear wine, I never noticed that in my last car, but it was so damn loud (convertible, with all solid mounts etc..) when moving anyway i dont know that i would have been able to hear it.

either way... car sounds cool.... keep pics coming...

What are your plans for the beam? You mentioned a Thing beam. I did a pretty wahzoo beam for my Thing, if you need any help with, it let me know.
