I do know that it is illegal to sell abalone meat in the US. There's a "farm", Joe's Abalone Farm just north of Morro Bay on US 1 that strictly has to sell to overseas (ie, Japan) buyers. As for diving, I wouldn't do it because it's just simply too dangerous with ocean currents and great whites.

Its not illegal to dive for it , the season opens on April first. You can only take 3 a day and 24 a year.As for sharks your right its very dangerous ,but you can rock pick and still find some nice abs.Abalone diving is a very exciting sport though , even just rock picking when the tide is down. You guys should pick up the movie The Hunt For Red Treasure, it was made by 3 Gualala locals and its very interesting. :D

A little over a month ago two kids were busted coming out of the water with over 120 rare black abalones, just south of Carmel. And I read that there was a Redwood City guy that got caught poaching for the third time within a year. Bastards.
From what I read the season is from April to November (North of SF Bay). |

It's cool you can still "go for it" and take 3! I think I'd want a heavy wetsuit in the waves/rocks! I might have 10 huge abalone shells in my flower beds here? There's 4 crab pots hanging in the barn! Friends gave us some crab they caught on the coast a while back!

This post brings back memories. When I was going to Cal Poly SLO, I lived in Avila Beach. We used to crawl around the point toward Diablo Canyon and abalone were everywhere. This was back in the 70's. We used to make abalone chowder. Yumm!

Don't dive for it but it tastes great, too bad it's so expensive. At the Point Lobos National Park, So of Monterey, there used to be a fantastic display of carved Abalone shells, done cameo style. They were beautiful. Some lowlifes broke into the old whalers cabin, where they were kept and stole them all. These dated back to the mid 1800s. Hopefully they were recovered.
