We are looking at buying another inexpensive car as a daily driver. The wife wants a VW. I found a 2000 VW TDI with 190K miles for $7K. I won't pay that much, but what do VW owners think? How high can these diesels go before major rebuild?

Ive seen a 92 Jetta Diesel go to 345,000. Actually as far as I know that car is still running.

I work at a dealer. A couple of years ago I worked on a 2000 TDI Jetta, it had almost 400k on it. It needed a new injection pump, the original was really worn out. The tranny was really worn too, but it was still running and driving.

I have 2 non TDIs (86 and 90) with 400,000 on them. They both run strong. Diesels will run a long time if maintained. The one thing with TDIs is they have some weird quirks that require more attention than the older ones. 190k is low mileage, Remember that big trucks use diesel for long life. I have driven trucks with over 500K all the time. One Has 120 million with one in frame rebuild.
