Heights lock and key at Lomas and San Mateo has them for sale. That's alfonso's old '58. He's got those locks on all three of his buses.

I live in the BIKe theft capital of the world and i reckon the Best Bus lock is the same as the best bike lock. Never lock it up and that way you will never leave it out of your sight and if it does go you'll only have yourself to blame( sad but true)
Crackheads ride 10 thousand dollar cannondales pulling trailers to collect cans and stolen Rv aluminum steps for a reason...because they can. Round here a bike goes for less than 5 bucks or a couple of rocks your bus could just be the same, its not even a money thing with those guys.

Happy camping!

Back in 1968 a couple of friends traveled in their brand new bay window bus all through the states and down to Mexico.
He would try to park off the road and every night the guy would hammer a 18 inch spike into the ground that had a wire and chain hooked up to the rear bumper.
He had a electric fence shocker hooked up to the body. If anybody messed with the bus they would get a shock and if they were getting
hassled he would just drive off and the chain would pull the ground rod out.

Bury it in cement with steel rod reinforcements, bugger will never be stolen ;)

Do this to the back every time you park.

I was camped out in my '65 in San Clemente in the early 90's and I heard the deck lid open up. I got up quietly, grabbed the "Club", (one of those red steering wheel locks) opened up the cargo doors and snuck around the back. This fucker was making a ton of racket with his head jammed in the engine compartment.

I am 6'5" and at that point had nothing on but a pair of chonies. I calmly asked him what he was doing and the look on his face was priceless. I've never seen someone run so fast! My battery was half torn out.
To this day I laugh at the look on that son-of-a-bitches face.

hugheseum wrote: my 56 sc is such a pile that i ussually leave the keys or exposed wires (often im just hot wiring it) just sitting there,my philosophy is if anyone really wants to steal it they are in for a helluva ride. first i doubt they could get it started with all the bs quirks it has,and then theres the brakes that need finesse to work right......yeah i dont worry about anyone stealing it.

sounds like my bus. its got 1 seat, the ignition switch is hanging down with all the wires to it... it doesn't run too well either.. good luck to the person who decides to steal if they can get it started. i live in a very small hick town, nobody's after the busses here.

thought i was stupid for forgetting the keys in my bus....seams like I ain' t alone. LOL

but yeah, it might not be a good idea to list your sercurity features to anybody, being some of us list where we live and being the only bus in a county, you might not be that hard to find.

just put random shit to slow them down....thats it, because give them the time and they WILL get it

That is really clever.
Just don't forget to jump out of the bus in the morning, or you'd be in for quite a shock.

The club is useless, a sharp hacksaw blade will go through a steering wheel in a matter of seconds. It is nothing but a false sense of security.

diamond dave Mon Jun 30, 2008 9:58 pm

what about drilling a hole in your clutch pedal down at floor level and putting one of those tamper proof padlocks on it? if you can't push the clutch, you aren't getting away real fast. may be a second one for the brake pedal. Evil Kinevil would even think twice about stealing a bus that he couldn't stop. ( but then again, if I was a thief, I'd just use the e-brake to stop. hmmm?)
just something I thought about while reading this. maybe I'll try it on my 64.

People steal buses out west huh?

I live in Ohio just south of Michigan, nothing gets touched out here.
I used to have a daily driver `61 westy, factory safaris, sloper rack in place and tent and all the goodies under the back seats. I would leave it parked in the street every night, unlocked for several years straight and it was never touched.

I recall my first trip to the VW Classic in `94 when someone stole the rack off Doug Denlinger's deluxe when he momentarily stopped for something at 7-11 ! They musta been following him...lord that is nuts! I imediately bought a bicycle lock and cable and chained my wood slat down to my bumper for the rest of the trip!

Thieves aren't people.
