karmann1952 Wed May 28, 2008 9:29 pm

Very interesting sheet. I donīt have it in my 52 vert. It could be that they have installed this sheet only during the first one or two years. Has anybody else of the split convertible owners this metal sheet :?:

Rich's 50 Thu May 29, 2008 7:29 am

Thank you .......would you happen to have pictures of your cars in this area....

Rich, this doesn't have anything to do with the current topic of the piece of metal in the engine compartment, but

Some years ago, I had the pleasure of driving Mark Merrill's 1950 Vert, from Volksauthority in San Jose, down all the back roads, to Solvang, and then high-tailing it (well, 60 mph in a 36 horse split is high-tailing it) back up the 101... I did a story in VW Trends called "Splitting to Solvang" where I chronicled my adventures with Ray Schubert, "Land Speed Larry" MacKenzie, and a few other die-hard Vintage guys... it wasn't a perfect car by any means, Mark had bought it restored, or at least cosmetically restored, rom Germany, and the previous restorer hadn't really gone all-out in the correct 14mm head fender bolts, 25 horse engine, etc etc. I don't know where that car is now, it may still be in Mark's collection, but I can tell you, driving through the Central CA countryside, with Erich Kircher in front, Larry MacKenzie in back (we had to keep him in back or he would disappear miles ahead of us), and Ray Schubert in his '48 Tuscher rollback, along with other old VW people, was something that still sticks out in my mind as one of the greatest adventures of my "VW Magazine Editor dork" career.
Anyway, at the time, it was a two-tone green, and I imagine if you can find the article I did back then, or photos from Solvang that year, you'll find photos of the car. Where it is now, I have no idea-

Dave

Dave,
That WAS a fun trip - let me know if you want to do it again this fall! And a minor correction - I purchased it from Bruce Braun in Kansas, who I think did get it from Europe.

Rich,
I will try to get some detailed pictures of the area that you are asking about and post them here this weekend.
Mark
