| I have done the search and found nothing. I have a thing that has been torn down by at least the last two owners. Back in the starter area I have four wires that are about a 10 gauge size, I need to know where they are suppose to hook up? In all the wiring diagrams that I have found there is only 3 wires. If some one has where the wires go and the colors that would be great. Oh it is a 74 thing. Thanks Emery |

Mine had 4 wires going to the starter when I bought it. This wiring diagram:
http://www.thingtech.com/wiredia2.html
Shows 5 wires going to the starter.
The starter is component B (the internal relay is shown separately, B is pretty long and not to scale) and shown on wire traces 24 and 25 (the black-on-yellow numbers at the bottom).
There's a threaded post which is basically the power pole for the car. On this post there are several cables with ring terminals:
- A cable going to the generator relay (for charging the battery) which is probably red with white strip
- A cable going to the battery. The wiring diagram shows this as black, but it is easy to replace and may be red. This is the only connection between the generator and battery.
- A cable to power the rest of the car. It should be red with white stripe also.
- A cable going to the test harness. This unnecessary cable should also be a red with white strip.
Finally, there's one connection (a tab connection) to trigger the starter from the key. It should be solid red. An improvement you can make to the system would put a relay near the starter to ease the current going through the key switch and make the car easier to start. If this has been done, that red wire may not be red anymore.[/list] |

| thanks for the help. It seems that who ever took this one apart used a cutting torch and wire cutters. the trans front mount is cut off. Oh well the things we discover once it is home. thanks again |

How about I post you a link to the entire vehicle diagram
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/wiring/181_Wiring_Diagram_4-73.pdf
But in a nut shell...
There are four heavy red wires, they ALL go to the bolt on terminal of the starter.
There is ONE smaller red wire (with a black stripe) it goes to the push on terminal at the starter. (Sometimes this wire is gray OR just covered with a gray sheath!!)
