Any opinions on the Adventurewagen. I am getting ready to buy my first bus, and I found this one for-sale. Also, is the automatic tranny problematic? Thanks for any advice you can give.

Is there not anybody that has an opinion on a 1978 adventurewagen? Is it worth owning, or should I just stick with the Westy?...Thanks, Misty

Try asking on the Westfalia list: http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/Westfalia/

This was covered in an earlier thread last week in this forum "westy or adventurewagen?" last post 05/21/03- check out the opinions there.

I own a 69 adventurewagen and enjoy it very much with all the extra space. I also have owned a hightop before and I am one of the ones that enjoys them for the roominess. Never having to hunch over all the time is nice too. It is like your wrestling the bus down the highway in a crosswind though but like all busowners i am not in a hurry to get there so I just find a place to pull over or watch the weather before leaving. The adventurewagen quality in the cabinets is not the best though like Westies are, I pulled the cabinets out of mine and went back with a westy interior instead but have all the extra head room. Storage over the cab is nice too and cabinets in the rear for whatever goodies you want. Happy Adventuring hope this helps. There is a nice green and white Adventurewagen for sale in san bernadino, he sells alot of stuff on this site, just go where you can see all of the stuff he has and it is there.

Thank you for the info. I'm going to look at her today, but after doing the research I think he wants too much for her. He says she is very clean with a rebuit motor, and all the cool camping stuff. What do you think about a price tag of 4500.00?

Thanks,
Misty

I really don't know it really depends on how nice it is and what kind of bus you want, you can pay the money and have a bus that doesn't need a lot of work or you pay a grand or so and put money into it and that might add up to 4000 but I would try bringing the price down, at least 3500 that would be reasonable. But I have always paid only around 1500 for my vw's but I would always end up putting money into them for a couple months to get them in tip top shape. For example the adventurewagen I have now sat for 4 years and I just asked him to get it running then I would take it and I paid 1500 for it then I had to redo the whole brake system(expected), then I put an ignition switch in and had it painted and now have new motor in it and it could total up to around 3000 or more that I have put into it, so you could go either route and not have to do as much as I have. I really hope it works out for you. Good luck in getting behind the "BIG WHEEL" it is an awesome feeling. Are you up in Norcali? I am getting ready for the Sierra Nevada Music fest up north, I am down in Santa Barbara. Good Luck. anthony
