View original topic: Should I part out or sell whole?

I have a great looking 1987 Cabriolet that just had $1k in repairs done on it last week and I find it needs another 1 or 2K in repairs to make it right. (All suspension issues) If these further repairs were done, I think the car would run for years and years to come. Thing is, I am totally broke and cannot invest any further money into what has become a project. Its an awesome looking car, runs perfect but it needs springs, struts, axles etc...

I'm wondering if I should try and sell the whole car as is and try to get $1k for it to recoup my losses or if I should part it out.

If I part it out, I wonder if any of you know if the seats (front and back) would fit into my 1974 VW Beetle. I know there are a lot of little parts I can sell online and it has a BRAND NEW (aaaugh!!) catalytic converter on it that I hear might be worth something as scrap.

I am really, REALLY going to miss this car. It has been good to me. I just am not sure what to do to get the most for my money. Having it sit in the carport while it is being stripped would not be a problem so, no worries there. Is it worth the effort?

Thanks in advance.

I put it up on my local Craigslist for $1k. If someone buys it, great. If not, I guess I'll try and part it out. I was looking at the seats and the Cabriolet seats are on a rail screwed to the body. Not sure how easy it would be to get them out. Has anyone ever changed the seats in a bug? Can it be done?

You'd have to bend the seat frames in the back inward where the sliders are - watercooled seat tracks on the floor are bit wider than on bugs. But there have been many people who have done this sort of thing successfully.
