You'll get no love here trying to put Ford parts on your VW. What manual are you reading by the way?

I believe you are talking about the hot start problem, which is very common on bays. Here is the info you need:

Having gone 12,000 miles around the country myself on one trip, I've experienced the problem of not wanting to start after driving for a few hours. There are two things that can keep you going. First, keep a hammer or crowbar handy, because often times, a couple of taps on the solenoid/starter do the trick. Another option that has worked for me is to put the bus in 3rd gear and push it backwards a couple of feet. These two tricks have come in very handy in a pinch. I have replaced that old starter and solenoid (still VW parts) and have since taken some long trips to California and back with no problems. Just a matter of preference, but I'd stick with stock parts...

I have had the problems as well with the hot start problem and even added the starter relay to it and it does the trick. The other option is getting all the right cooling tin on the engine and get the engine seals all in around the motor to keep it cool and even those few degrees also did the trick to keep the starter cooler on both of my buses as soon as I did that I didn't have to worry about pulling in backwards on a hill everywhere I parked. Just keep it stock like Richard said it will be easier in the end to stay with all the same language parts. anthony

to fix your problem properly, replace your starter and bushing. if these are fine use a bosch relay. resistance builds internally within a starter when worn and exposed to heat. buy new & have some reliablity.

thanks so much for the advice. as to where i heard it, i read it in the " how to keep your vw alive" manual and have heard this from several people. my motor was just rebuilt and runs flawlessly, and all the seals seem to be good and where they need to be. i will probably replace the starter before my cross country trip and install a relay from a supplier like busboys or someone, just to be safe. i really appreciate the feedback!!!
