I found a '74 412 wagon for sale near me, asking price $700. It has "little rust" and "needs some work". Opinions please, I am thinking about going past and checking it out. I wish I knew how to post pictures as I have one.

Maybe.
Type 4's require more patience than the other projects in your siggy. Parts are harder to come by. Rust repair can get real involved with a unibody constucted car like a 412.
Since you have other projects, I don't see the big rush to buy this particular 412. Getting them in a need-TLC condition aren't that difficult. I would pass unless I wanted to make it my next-right-stinking-now project.
But that's just me. And you did ask. |

Can't help with the cost of the car, don't anything about $ (I'm English you see :D ). Although oasis has some valid points about rust, thought mine was more rust free than it is but that's another storey
Posting pictures is easy though.
You need to have an account with something like Photobucket (one of those picture hosting type of sites).
You stick (download) your picture into there then you can copy the [img] code it gives you which you then paste into the forum you want the picture to appear in, it then (by some form of magic  ) puts your picture into your post for you on the forum. |

You can also post pictures directly to The Samba, no need to have an account elsewhere. Go to the Galley, click ADD PHOTO, and follow the directions from there. You will need to have the photo stored on your computer and properly sized and in one of the accepted formats like .jpeg. It is not as daunting as it seems.
The T4 are harder to restore than many other rigs of the same age, but they are enjoyable cars. Most of the rarer parts turn up on eBay every few months and it appears that some people must have secret trailers filled with them, they just meter them out to keep the price up. I have found every major part I needed and my spares may out last the petroleum age. |

I didn't mean to come across as disliking 412s (or 411s). I just noticed the original poster has other projects and a 412 may require more dedication than he may be willing to offer. It was supposed to be a make-sure-you-consider-this sort of thing.
I had a Type 4 engine in my Super Beetle, and the cars I was thinking about getting to join it are now the cars I am considering to replace it. A 412 is one of those cars. |
