  View original topic: Temp Range?

I have a '79 Westy that I put a new longblock in this winter and I have a vdo oil temp and pressure gauges. I put about 12000 miles on it last year (old motor) and while the gauges are great, I really don't know where the temp should be. I have noticed my new motor runs a lot cooler both on extended trips and around town. I took it to Cincinnati, OH for Buses N Boats '03 (about 1200 miles round trip) and it ran great, without any problems at all. It is my daily driver and the ambient temps here in the "cuse can range anywhere from 40 to up over 100 and can change that much over the course of a day. Anyway, I see people talking about watching the temp gauge, pull over if it gets too hot, etc. My question is, where should the temp be lets say on a road trip mid summer a few hundred miles? My temp gauge goes up to 300 and I am smart enough to know it shouldn't ever get that high, but what temps are everyone else's Buses running at?

Oh yeah...I run 20W-50 oil and on my trip to Ohio, it was around 70 degress all the way there and back, and the temp stayed right around 215 although around Buffalo it did seem to run a little hotter, maybe 225...hard to tell cause the gauge goes from 210 to 250 without any increments in between....there's space in between them, but no numeric designation as to exact temp...

You sound fine for long trips. Ideal temp is about 210, but that doesn't always happen in the summer. On a long trip 215 is no problem. Even up to 230 won't hurt now and then like going up hills and such. My '79 runs the same temps as yours.

You should really also monitor your head temps as well, as they are more indicative of the actual load you are placing on the motor, as rpms influence oil temps more dramatically. Also, since your type 4 has an oil filter, you'd benefit from running synthetics and longer service intervals. Synthetics also are a lot happier with higher temps. We've had some customers with great experience with Castrol 5w50 and it hold up for roughly 5k miles between changes. Mobil 1 0w40 or 15w50 also works well. Just make sure to use a good filter like a Pure One or a K&N Gold.
