Still having problems. Engine will start, but as soon as I take my foot off the pedal, the engine quits. It will start up immediately and run.

Have checked the carb and the distributor, points and timing. There is really old gas in this car, hasnt been run in over 2 years, could this be the culprit?

ANy ideas or suggestions for this one?

thanks
jim

hey Jim
i would have to say that the gas would be the first place to look. gas that old is good for washing greasy parts..lol
if it persists with new gas, then i would check the carb for trash
but first i would siphon all the old gas out and try some fresh

I would drain the tank, flush the lines and remove the carbs for a thorough cleaning-gummed up idle circuits are more than likely the cause.Berkible 2+2 carb and choke cleaner is some of the best stuff i have found for cleaning up old gas.Just a thought, if your keeping the bus replace the fuel lines while your fixing this problem-use oe style fuel hose .A fire in a bus isn't uncommon. Thanks for the input

The carb is off another bus that was running fine, so I dont think that is it. I will work on draining the tank and see what happens.

Could this be a leak in the intake manifold?? Any ideas how to get at that one?

On your intake if your wondering if there is a leak, while it is running spray a little mist of starter fluid around where the gaskets are and if the idle changes from it sucking in the starter fluid then there is a leak,(don't drench the area with fluid for obvious reasons). Check all the nuts to make sure they are tight. Good luck with it hopefully it is just the old gas, what a smell old gas has too!! anthony

Drained all the old gas and still the bus wont stay on once I let go of the gas pedal.

I am going to clean the carb today, but it is from another bus that ran fine, so dont think that is it.

I sprayed a little carb cleaner on the intake manifold, where the 2 rubber rings are and the engine increased just a very little bit from idle. Could this be it? It did not increase alot, just a tiny bit.

If it is a small leak but causes the car not to run, how can I fix it? ANy other suggetions on what the culprit might be as it was not bad gas.

Jim
I had a similar problem on my beetle recently. After much checking of timing, dwell, valve clearance etc etc, I notice a wire off the distributor was broken...the one that goes to the electromagnetic cutoff valve & autochoke. Fixed that wire & all my problems were gone. One little wire caused me so much trouble! Don't know if the arrangement is the same on your bus.
