i am leaving for my croos country trip in 2 weeks. im getting things ready. i have a general direction but no specific routes or anything yet. i am going to Colorado, utah, out to cali, wash, oregon, and canada. if anyone has suggestions on which roads, hwy, interstate to take i would appreciate the info. i am planning on checking out some ntl parks and bike riding but mainly i would like info on scenic routes or just good routes to take. also i am going to print out the type2 airs list before i go but if anyone would like to help a weary bus traveler out with a warm shower and i cozy driveway to crash in along the way it would be much appreciated. thanks for any info , help, advice, good luck and ill see you on the road!!!!

If you are coming up to the Cali., Oregon area I highly recomend taking hwy 101 up the coast. Beautiful views and alot of the pullouts/ viewpoints you can spend the night in. Just make sure that there aren't any "no camping or overnight parking" signs posted. There are some good mtn. bike trails through this stretch also if thats the kind of biking you do. I did this a few years back over a week and started in Seaside OR. and turned around at the Redwood Forest area in Northern Cali. Hopefully going to be doing it again this summer. I'm in the Portland OR. area. If you need a driveway to crash in for a couple of nights and a hot shower give me a heads up of when you'll be through and if I'm home your more than welcome.

where are you leaving from? I am on the AIRS list if you end up this way.

Stay on 101 up through Oregon and Washington if you like - its nice. But unless you have camping reservations on the Ore. coast, you won't be sleeping in any campgrounds, most likely (they get booked up solid). Its worth it to go all the way up into the Olympic Peninsula in Wa. State (don't stop in Aberdeen, HA!). You could take a ferry out of either Anacortes or Kingston back to the mainland. Port Townsend is a really cool town - check them out on the web and see if there are any festivals going on around the time you'll be there. Once you're heading up to Canada, try the Darrington Loop into the North Cascades - Hwy. 92 through Granite Falls around to Hwy. 530 all the way up to US 20 - some of the better scenery in the State. When you're coming back East on US 20, you can head North for a side trip up to Upper Baker Dam for a good shot of Mt. Baker.

You do this, and you miss Mts. Raineir, Adams and St. Helens, so maybe you want to zag over to I-5 after Ore. and hit them really quick. There are sections on Raineir that can be pretty hard on the brakes, so be careful if you do that.

Matt - AIRS is the Aircooled Interstate Rescue Squad. They are a loose group dedicated to aiding VW travellers who've broken down. See www.type2.com/rescue .

AIRS is a wonderful feat that could only be taken on by such wonderful people as VW owners. I wouldn't leave for a cross country trip in a VW without that list. I would join if I were you. FREE Jeff T. Landis
