Ive got a 77 westy. What's the name of the engine seal that goes around the bottom part of the engine. You know, its foam and it keep exhaust from running directly into your bus. I've concluded that is the cause of my exhaust smell in the cab problem.

Its called the engine compartment seal. Check the seal on the rear hatch, deck lid and the hatch located under the bed. If any are bad they should be replaced. good luck.

If any parts of the seal is missing, replace it for $20. If you touch it and it disintegrates, replace it. It's required to keep the engine cool (same function seals out exhaust) and to keep dirt out of the intake clogging up the air filter.

There is a void behind the bus as you drive and seals on the real that allow air in (cracked, missing, deformed, etc) will allow exhaust to come in. I have a bad seal on the rear hatch and it doesn't allow the door to close properly so it's slightly ajar on one side.

The access hatch lid on 73-79 models has a seal also but since it's partly inside the bus I've never seen a bad one even at the junkyard. I just noticed this seal in a recent search of body seals:

I think I explained that wrong. It's a piece of foam that surrounds the actual engine. It's not made of rubber, its foam. Um, if you open up the engine compartment, it's the foam piece that keeps you from seeing through the compartment to the ground. There, I think that was better. So, what is that one called?

Check the other recommended seals too while you are at it from the previous posts.

That's the one. No confusion here.

There is always some debate on the right way to install it. According to the parts diagrams the ends join in front of the cooling fan. The lighter colored porous side of the foam goes up and the darker more solid side goes down. The diagrams in bentley and the workshop manual bear this out.
