First problem
Any ideas? 69 bus starts up but engine dies as soon as I take my foot off the gas pedal. Here is what I have checked..
cleaned the carb
drained gas and put in new gas
check dist, points and timing
Also sprayed carb cleaner on intake manifold while running and did not notice an increase in engine speed. Any other thoughts what this might be??
Second problem on 68 camper..
Engine wont start or turn over. Checked the starter and solenoid and batter-all check out good.
How do I check the ignition switch to see if that is the problem??? How do I replace it if necessary?/
The engine just clicks when I try and start it.
Thanks |

69 bus- sounds like your iddle cut off valve os broken. this shuts off the fuel supply for iddle when you turn off the ignition, thus effectivelly eliminating any chance of run on. when they break they break in the closed possition, or you just might not have it hooked up. so check that next.
68 camper- the ground strap that goes from the tranny to the frame is probably corroded and screwing things up. check all battery cables, or replace if you dont know what to look for, and check-replace the ground strap on the tranny to frame.
good luck

Oh yeah I forgot, I agree sounds like the electromagnectic cutoff jet (if your running a stock single port with the 30-pict 2 carb that is)
what is your engine / carb anyway???
you can test the ignition switch with a test light, pull the smaller spade connector wire off the soleniod and have someone turn the key while you hold the light ( grounded good) to the wire if it lights up the trouble is not the switch....
check the grounds and stuff like lc sez... good luck |

Thanks for the help
the wire to the idle cut off valve was off and that was the problem.
Also, the ground strap on te tranny was corroded, so I sanded it and now the bus is starting. I have been in thailand starting a home for orphaned and abused children and just got back and am trying to get the buses on the road again. Thanks for the advice!!!
One more question...I am helping to switch and engine from a 67 bus to the 68. The 67 engine, a 1600 dual port does not have the holes for the bottom bracket which seems to be needed to fit into the 68 bus. How do I make the attachment? I think there is a part that In need.
Thanks for all the good words that got the buses runnin!!

You could use an adaptor plate that bolts onto the 4 oil pump studs, not the greatist idea but it works, can cause oil leaks though.
sometimes the case may have all three or 2 out of the three "bosses" that are just not drilled and tapped. if so you coudl do that instead of the funky adapter bracket. or it may be a cas that does not have them at all.
do a close comparison... |
