View original topic: mysterious hole in dash

in my 78 deluxe campmobile there is a sort of small trimmed out hole directly under the glove box knob. it is grounded with a single hot wire going to it. it is an original option of some sort because it appears in the manual but there is no explanation anywhere. it looks like the headlight dimmer switch would fit in it but there are no threads in it and it is not a switch. i thought it may be a map light socket. any information will be helpful, even guesses at this point, thanks

That is the infamous silver accessory socket.
In Europe, they sell all sorts of gadgets to plug into it, map lights etc. I believe here in the USA, you can find things to plug into it at the BMW motorcycle dealers.
You should find info on it at www.type2.com if you do a search on 'silver socket'.
I removed mine and put a cig lighter socket in its place.....more useful.

Heres what I did. I wanted to keep the stock look of the Westy so as stated above I went to my local BMW motorcyle shop and purchased a plug that had bare ends on it. I then went to Radio Shack and bought a three port standard cig. lighter accessory unit and hard wired the Euro plug into it. Now all I have to do is plug into the dash and I have three standard sockets for MP3 player, 12v TV, etc. etc. I keep everything in the glove box and out of the way. Works great!
