Does anyone have a picture of an engine showing the cooling flange installed, as well as the V belt. I am trying to understand the concept. Does it go in front of the pulley?
Thanks |

I went to answer this the other day but then my computer locked up on me - and now I see no one else has so I'll try again. I'm not sure exactly which cooling flange you are talking about. So I'll scan this photo out of an old dealership 411 repair book from the early 70s, and you tell us which piece you are needing advice about, click on this picture to enlarge it:

Thanks Andy,
Unfortunately, that view doesn't show what I needed. There is a plastic piece that bolts to the fan housing and it is connected to the body by a boot. This is supposed to allow only cool air to be drawn in to cool the engine. I am trying to understand how the plastic piece bolts to the housing in relation to the Alt. belt.

| I was out of town when you posted your answer and I missed it. I think you might have posted in the wrong forum, as type 4 engines don't use that rubber boot, they have a timing scale and a screen that bolt onto the fan opening. Is this for your 1973 Squareback model? That's an entirely differnent layout. |

????????? If it is not a rubber boot then what is the stock piece bolted to the T4 fan shroud, part number 021 119 609 *?
Squarebacks use one style and sedans another.
AFAIK all stock Type 4 are timed through a hole in the top of the shroud, they do not have a timing scale. |

| Oh yeah, you're right. I'ts been years since I worked on one. Forgot about that timing hole in the top. Most of the type 4's I ever saw were after they'd been tranplanted into Busses, ya know? My type 4 book here doesn't show that outer piece at all then. I just looked at it again - have to be careful because the paper is very brittle, saw mention of the bellows but no pictures. |

Here is a pic from my type 3 transplant im doing, this flange just bolts to the three posts on the fan shroud and the pulleyfan and belt run behind it. Damo.
