Heres something to ponder, about 200KM north of me is the Ft McMurray oil sands. The stuff is literally right under our feet, and we pay $1.10/L for regular gas and $1.21/L for diesel. A few weeks ago, diesel used to be about $0.98/L but all of a sudden, supposedly, the upgrader that makes diesel in Edmonton (nearest city) went down and diesel shot up. I bet that even when the thing is fixed that the price wont go down. And another thing, alot of oil is imported to the US from Saudi Arabia, now you tell me why it is cheaper to bring the stuff all the way from there to the US and sell it cheaper than what we pay even though the oil is right here, where it is right under our feet?
Rant over... |

The cost of of production is what keeps the oil sands and shale off the market. It takes a lot of work and water to produce it. So in the end the price of gas would be about the same. |

Sure, they don't use strip mining where I am, they use steam injection and pump it out with the usual pump jack. |

Unless you americans stop using up all the damn oil..
Being as you folks are in Europe and you can ride a bike accross it in a day or so it would be nice if you all just parked your cars and and switched to riding bikes as you dont really have any place important to go anyways. That will save plenty of lower priced gas for me to drive up to the quicky mart for beer and smokes and I can leave the ac on while im in the store... |

Yup. "Word on the street" is there's going to be an independent trucker's strike April 1.
Problem is, way too many independents hung it up within the last few years. If American trucks don't roll, Mexican trucks will. Just another case of the American worker taking it up the tuchus with an outsourcing plan already in place if he tries to fight back. |

Actually, don't forget that in Europe they have kick ass public transpo UNLIKE here in the USA. You don't absolutely need a car in Europe. |

Yeah yeah, I know European countries aren't the biggest in the world, but anyhow we need our cars just the same as you guys - As Kickass as our public transports may be, the ticketprices are also skyrocketing.. So that leaves me with:
(I have about 15 miles to work)
1/ Public transport, takes about 45 min, because I live outside of the city and buses are only once an hour. Costs ruffly 10$, and I probably have to stand up the whole way...
2/ Take my car. A car I already have. Takes about 20 min, INCLUDING a stop at the bakery for a doughnut to enjoy on my journey. Costs me about 1/3 of a gallon of gas, and it's a comfy ride alle the way to the door...
I know what I should do, for the sake of the environment.
But I also know how much i like my doughnuts..
Now when that's said, it's true that we have very good public transport in the big cities. And I use it when I go there, cause it's impossible to get a parking space anyway. |
