View original topic: What kind of metal? '93 Jetta downpipe (engine conversion)

Hi all.

Was just about to tack this in place, when I realized the magnetic "holder" wasn't attracted to it.

This "Y" is part of a '94 Jetta downpipe (primaries)

It doesn't feel heavy enough to be aluminum. SS maybe?

Can I MIG weld mild steel to SS with solid steel wire and Ar/Co2?

I"m so embarrassed.

Should have checked to see what the material was before taking time to prep it. But then I'm still quite a newb to welding.

Many thanks,

Neil.

Stainless is heavier than aluminum. You can always do the "spark test" (do a search with Loogy as author for more info).

Yes, you can MIG weld stainless to steel with normal steel wire and Ar/CO2.

Thanks Andrew.

I wasn't certain how good the weld would be with the mystery metal, so I ended up making another "Y". I thought all was lost and I'd have to start over with my exhaust when I thought to my self "like duh. Ya got a welder!"

Copied the angles (roughly) of old one, cut up two pieces of 1-7/8" ground, filed, cussed and welded.

It won't be as good as stock in terms of design, but it should hold.

Thanks,

Neil.
