My battery warning lamp came on on my 77 westy. I drove it ok with the headlights on, no problem. The battery seems strong. My voltage regulator is HOT to the touch. I am assuming it is bad. Called Busdepot to order replacement they want to know which alternator do I have- 55 or 70 amp? How do I tell? What does it matter? Can I test my out put to determine which I have? Thanks for any help>

If you have the 70amp it will have cooling fins on the alternator pulley. The 50amp does not have the fins.

Thanks for your help, no fins. I bought a regulator locally, it didn't solve the problem, I still have a warning light on.

Did you check your belt?

I did not check my belt. I looked at it, it was turning the alternator, but I will examine it closer. Thanks for the tip.
