I have a chance to pickup a 1974 914 with a complete motor and had a couple of ??'s. What is the difference between the 914 2L and a 2L from a bus? Is it worth the extra $?? Are the heads the same? etc
thanks all

I recently acquired a 1976 Porsche 914 with the 2.0 liter engine and stock fuel injection. I tore the engine down and aside from needing new bearings the engine appears solid. The heads appeared in good shape and the P/Cs were nice and smooth with no scoring. It had the dished US spec pistons. Has anybody had any experience with one of these engines in a bus. I know they are basically the same engine, but does the 914 fuel injection and gigantic cylinder head valves improve the bus performance. The 914 body was rusted away and actually broke in half when I towed it home. It was rumored by the previous owner to be one of the last 100 made according to the vin #. Any advice, suggestions, or past experience is appreciated. Thanks.

should work just fine, especially since it has the lower compression dished pistons not the domed. as for the fuel injectgion and the large valves, the large valves would have to help with something
good luck

The Porsche engine has the dipstick and oil fill location on top of the engine since it is a mid engine car. The block is not machined to accept the rear oil fill and dipstick, nor is it machined for a mechanical fuel pump. If your going to use the fuel injection you won't need a mechanical fuel pump anyway. As long as you have the access hole in the top of your engine compartment (72 busses didn't) you can add and check oil through it. I have a 72 1.7 914 engine in my 73 bus and it runs great! Good luck!

My '76 Bus has the 914 engine swapped in. Don't know who installed it, do know that it hauls! Roll on is alot swifter. I installed a twin exhuast, noticed the operating temp dropped bit and sounds better too.

will fit same as bus engine but you won,t have the dipstick in back you will have to pull from top, same with oil filler.
