My engine developed a popping noise yesterday which seems to originate in the carb.
There was no popping noise before I changed my exhaust, but after I changed it it began. I pulled the exhaust off and RTVd the gaskets and I thought it stopped it last night, however, I went out this morning to move it and the sound was back.
Someone mentioned pulling the plugs one at a time to see if it stops- I did and it is #2.
What does that mean?
Is it serious?
I haven't driven the thing- it has sat while I did some hole patching in the wheel wells. |

| Sounds like it might be a sticky valve. Does it stop after the motor is warmed up? |

| hmmm- haven't tried. What would warming it up do? |

| It sometimes frees up a sticky valve. |

If it sounds like it's popping popcorn, especially as the rpm increase, then it is probably a leak in the exhaust system. Jeremy
ps what are your exhaust gaskets like? Keifernet posted recently that the ones with the gasket sandwiched in metal are the good ones. |

I have the metalic gaskets. I took the exhaust back off last night and put RTV on the faces and the retightened the bolts. I took it for a ride after and nothing. I go out this morning to move it, and the noise is back. Checked for leaks at the gaskets and there are none.
As I mentioned. If I pull the #2 plug wire, it stops. Plug it in, it pops. |

| Sounds like the intake valve on #2 is too tight or sticky. If you know how to adjust valves then you should check them and probably loosen this one up a little. If it is sticky then it should stop when the engine warms up and the valve guide expands a little allowing the valve to move more freely. I'm not a big fan of additives, but I have used Chemtool and Sea Foam for sticky lifters with good results. I prefer Sea Foam. You will probably need to go to a parts store to find either. Whatever it is it doesn't sound serious. Good luck. |
