I am trying to find the source of my popping noise. I pulled off the valve covers and found a wire across all the rockers- on both sides.
On the #1,#2 side (right) the wire is not connected to anything on the right side- it looks like it has snapped or something. On the other side (#3,#4) the end it tucked in.
????
Could this cause popping noise? |

| The wire is the pushrod tube retaining wire. The pushrod tubes slide through the heads into the case and the wire keeps them from sliding back out. It sounds like the #3,4 side is installed properly. It shouldn't have anything to do with the popping sound. milotype2 |

You didn't specify which motor you have, if it is a type IV 1700, 1800 or 2L
the wire is a retaining wire for the push rod tubes. The type IV engine has a
rocker shaft for each cylinder, each rocker shaft has a grooved spacer on each end which holds the rocker shaft in place. The wire should tuck into a groove in the bottom of each of the rocker arm shaft spacers and should tuck in on the
ends. To get the wire installed correctly I think you should lossen the rocker
shafts, slide them out just enough to place the wire on the push rod tube and
into the groove on the spacer then snug down the two nuts and torque them to
10ft.lbs. and set the valves.
I have seen these wires rust in half on older engines that didn't get the right
maintenance and oil changes.
Anyway, if you have a type I engine I don't know what the wire could be unless someone has installed a lock wire on the hold down nuts of the rocker shaft.
Neither of these should cause your engine to make a popping sound, is the sound
when you start the engine, it could be to small of an idle jet if you have duel carbs or does it pop like when your are slowing down or turn of your engine if so it could be an exhaust leak check out your exhaust system for carbon streaking. Good luck.

Whip,
It is a type 4 2L with hydraulic lifters.
I have a single Weber progressive. The popping sound sounds like it comes from the carb. It goes away when I pull #2 plug wire. |

| I'd guess your exhaust gasket for that cylinder's exhaust manifold is leaking. You might be able to feel it (blowing out) while the engine is running. Jeremy |

| Just read your other reply, I don't know what else you'd check, sorry. Jeremy |
