my 69 bus has developed a nasty backfire today.
i took it out earlier to the store and it was running fine, but a little sluggish. when i took it out again later in the afternoon, i had no power, and it was running oftly hot. i checked the dwell, and reset the timing at TDC. when i would rev the engine it would backfire eradically. often shooting out a huge cloud of black smoke. i tried readjusting the timing but the back fire is still there. could this mean there is a stuck valve ot what?

i have had exaust driven back fires before, but they are only on the overrev during down shifting. so this is a new one.

any input is apreciated.

thanks

Sometimes loss of power can be a loss of a valve, so do a compression test to check. If thats not it I would suggest running through a tune up, more specifically doing a valve adjustment and checking the spark plugs.

Make sure all the plugs are firing, Plug wire loose or off? exhaust leak near the heads?

Also could be leaky exhaust fittings. However since this happened suddenly, I agree with 71Adventure and Cook91 and would start there. In my case I had the backfiring, then "boom", and next found the #1 plug sitting on the tin. The plug (and part of a helicoil from a prior repair) had blown all the way out. No power and lots of backfiring.
