had a fire in the engine in 78 bus - scary. i'm not much of a mechanic myself but think it was electrical - at least the cables burned. we got AAA and got it towed but it was the 4th of July holiday so no mechanic in sight. it had some problems earlier in the day. it ran fine in hot hot weather for a long trip on really bumpy roads. then it kind of jerked (very slightly) or sputtered but very infrequently. then it went away. then it did it again 3 times much later in the day - then the whole car just stopped. we pulled over. the engine was on fire (not bad or big - but still a fire). we put out the fire. there was some damage - mainly to electrical wires. of course it has an oily engine. anyone have any ideas?

Bumpy road, sputtering first- my first guess would be rotten fuel lines and/or a clamp that came loose.

My rule of thumb is replace all rubber fuel line every 2 years. -Jeremy
