Well, it was a well-written farcical piece. James May delivered it perfectly, so well that even Beetle lovers aren't really offended by his tongue-in-cheek rant.
I'm not sure that the US presenters could pull this off, particularly if the producers assume that the US audience is composed exclusively of NASCAR types who will switch channels if they are forced to parse words more than eight letters long.
Here's another bit that would be a stretch for the US presenters. No complicated dialogue here, but could they resist the urge to fill the empty space with inane chatter?:

| Wow! That Astin Martin clip was a really moving piece of work. It made me sad, and the cinimatagraphy is amazing. The people that put that show together really know what their doing and enjoy it. You can tell by the end result. Thanks for sharing that. |

The US Top Gear is complete Rubbish...... no way around it.
MAYBE if you'd never seen the UK version and liked shitty shows about cars you'd like it, but otherwise its terrible. Tanner Faust is alright, but thats the only decent thing about the entire show. |

Yeah my friend has been watching it, but he's never seen the UK version. I'm on a mission now--to get him to watch the UK version. I explained to him that if he likes anything about the American version, he will absolutely love the proper UK version. |

Funny how you use one of Clarkson's favorite put-downs to describe USTG! :)
It hasn't hit a stride yet, but I don't think it qualifies as complete rubbish. Given time for the hosts to develop some personality and for the writers to come up with some original bits and I think it has a chance. If they keep cribbing the best bits we've already seen from UKTG they are not going to progress. |

Just so those worried about the destruction of a Beetle in Part 2 of the UK Top Gear Christmas Special, can rest easy tonight...it didn't happen.
The trailer they showed after Part 1 last week must be for the forthcoming new series. Part 2 of The Christmas Special was up to the usual standard with a challenge to re-enact the journey of the 3 wise men to Bethlehem. I won't do a plot-spoiler, you'll just have to watch it yourselves. |

I have ried to watch it several times to give it a chance with me. Just got bored and switched to C-Span so I would not have to hear such blow hards rambling about nothing. |

One place I've been able to watch TGUK episodes without any trouble is www.streetfire.net. This Christmas episode is already on it. You can also find quite a few seasons on Netflix if you subscribe, but the streetfire site is free. |

Fantastic television, pictures can speak a thousand words and move oneself emotionally.
I really think that sort of television is required for an American top gear if only to pitch in a balance to the popcorn. American television is not unable to do this I'm sure of that.
The whole thing needs a rethink, not only some presenters but the content and what sort of audience they are pitching it all at.
I think that all starts with presentation, I see those three lads on top gear UK genuinely having a good time, this fun passes to the audience easily because it is real.
I hope they can get it right... |

| Ok so I'm still not a fan but on the latest episode they were all tasked to buy and sell a used car. Tanner Foust bought a 74 Porsche 914. I'm not sure if the car was really as bad as he made it seem or if he just didnt know how to drive it. He said repeatedly thoughout the episode that it had no reverse and no first gear. I think that maybe he didnt realize that first gear was down and to the left instead of up. Maybe not though because he is supposed to be a race car driver so he probably could have figured that out. Either way it was kind of cool to see a 914 on the show. |

I'm amazed TG UK has such a big following the other side of the pond.
I've not tried to find a video of the US version, I dont think I'll bother either. The trailer looked hideously unfunny, and clearly just a copy of the original with slightly different accents.
I also think that it is probably funnier to a Brit, as a lot of the jokes rely on people knowing the UK reasonably well. Like when Jezza drives the Nissan Cube to Tunbridge Wells, I know that Tunbridge Wells is a boring dull little town in Kent, I guess it's pretty meaningless to others.
Despite possibly a slight decline, UK Top Gear is still the best thing on TV. With House a close second, not that it really caught on here, but the odd new episode filters through occasionally. |
