View original topic: removing paint from chrome?

Had this on the Ghia forum, but realized it's more of a general question.

***************

I'm lucky to have good bumpers and nostrils on this car (68 KG coupe). But every
chrome part has been painted blue. (some is peeling off, to reveal shiny part below...)

So I'm wondering what's the best way or chemical to remove paint without
damaging the chrome underneath?

Thanks for any help.

Well you have a couple of options. You could use rubbing compound and buff it off. I don't think that would be much fun though.

If it was me I would probably use aircraft paint remover and just strip most of it. Then buff what was left. I would highly recommend taking the parts off the car if this is the way you are going to go. Also wear good rubber gloves and safety glasses. If you can find it get the low odor stuff too. It seems to take the paint off about as well and won't knock you out from the fumes.

heres another easy cheap way, remove the parts and soak in brake fluid overnight, paint should just wipe right off the next day, unless its powdercaot, lol

you can try that fine steel thread wire stuff. its a lot of scrubbing but hey it works and its cheap.

The aircraft stripper idea is the best way in my opinion. Some Yahoo always paints chrome and l use paint remover and then just polish the chrome by hand with Mothers. Works fine for me.

I have heard that you can use liquid soap flakes ( the brown/gold mass ) and put it in a plastic bag in a couple of days. Then it should be easy to take of. Only if the paint are bad.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.
I'll post which method I use, and how it
turns out. I'm planning to test small areas
with the various methods, and decide from
there...

thanks again!

use poly-strippa. cheaper than aircraft removers, and available at any hardware store. use a plastic scraper to take off the gunk, then finish with 00 or 0000 steel wool- fine enough not to scratch the chrome.

Well, I'm curious.... How'd it turn out??? I'm figuring they painted it for a reason?? it was rusty???? Could just let the chrome shop strip it...., No seriously I hope it is polishable underneath..... interseted on which method worked best....

well, got held up unclogging the fuel line.
Is finally clear after about a week working
on it. Went the carb cleaner "soak" & rented
air compressor route. Cleaned out the fuel pump
pump too & got new fuel lines. Guess
the carburetor is probably full of gunk too.

So I haven't started on the chrome yet....
Will post results when I do - hope it's not
rusty underneath!!

dude this is gonna sound crazy but try putting catsup on them and rubbing with tin foil. i know it sounds like im psyco but it works for rust on chrome so maybe it will work for paint.

Let my wife drive your car for a week or two...I guaranty you there won't be any paint left on the chrome.

Are you talking about just spots of paint, overspray, or did someone completely paint something that is supposed to be chrome?
